William Ricketts Sanctuary

Explore William Ricketts Sanctuary in the Dandenong Ranges, where kiln-fired clay sculptures sit along fern-lined paths through the bushland.

William Ricketts Sanctuary is an outdoor sculpture garden in the Dandenong Ranges, at Mount Dandenong. Kiln-fired clay figures appear along paths through a fern gully, bringing art into the surrounding bushland. Ricketts bought the land in 1934; journeys to Central Australia and time in India later shaped his work. Walk slowly to notice the figures and their detailed expressions, then watch an on-site film about the artist and his work. Entry is free, with donations appreciated.

The sanctuary’s paths wind through a fern gully, with clay sculptures set among the surrounding bushland. The figures include Aboriginal people and animals, and their placement makes the walk a gradual discovery. Look closely at their expressions and details as you move between the works.

The garden is a place to take at an unhurried pace. Its paths bring visitors close to the sculptures while keeping them within the natural setting. The site is in the Dandenong Ranges, on Mount Dandenong Tourist Road.

William Ricketts bought the land in 1934 and created kiln-fired clay sculptures for the sanctuary. From 1949 to 1960, he made repeated journeys to Central Australia and lived with Pitjantjatjara and Arrernte Aboriginal people. Their cultures and traditions influenced his sculpture. He later lived in India from 1970 to 1972, where he felt a spiritual connection with the people.

An on-site film provides more about Ricketts’ life and work. An audio tour is also available through the William Ricketts website; check there before your visit for details.
