Observatory Hill

Visit Observatory Hill in Millers Point for views of Sydney Harbour and the Harbour Bridge, a picnic lawn and the historic Sydney Observatory.

Observatory Hill is a grassy park in Millers Point, above The Rocks, with elevated views across Sydney Harbour, the Harbour Bridge and the city. Bring a picnic to enjoy on the lawn, or come in the afternoon as the light changes over the water. The hill is also home to Sydney Observatory, a museum and public observatory in a historic building. It is an easy walk from Circular Quay, though the climb up the hill takes effort.

Sydney Observatory and the time ball

Observatory Hill
Observatory Hill

The hill takes its name from Sydney Observatory, built between 1857 and 1859. It is described as Australia’s oldest observatory and now operates as a museum and public observatory. The historic building is a landmark on the hill, and a telescope is among the features visitors can see there.

A time ball on the observatory roof still drops at 1pm. The site also has a Bureau of Meteorology weather station, linking its astronomical history with weather observation.

The park, its trees and rotunda

The park’s grassy slope looks towards the Harbour Bridge and Sydney’s north shore. Moreton Bay fig trees shade parts of the grounds; many were planted in the 1880s. The view also takes in Barangaroo and the Walsh Bay wharves, with Luna Park visible across the harbour.

The rotunda was built in 1912 and was once a regular performance spot for the Metropolitan Band, particularly on Sunday afternoons. Today it is used for weddings and other celebrations. From the lawn, the bridge and harbour remain the main draw, especially in the changing late-afternoon light.
