ArtPlay

ArtPlay is a children’s arts centre in Birrarung Marr, beside the Yarra River and behind Federation Square in central Melbourne. Its changing exhibitions and artist-led workshops give children space to experiment with art, sound, music and movement, with activities for babies through to age 13. Interactive installations such as the Sonic Labyrinth invite children and adults to explore together. The adjacent ArtPlay Playground adds outdoor play, sculptures and climbing features, so families can combine a creative session with time outside.

Creative activities for children

ArtPlay is a City of Melbourne arts space in Birrarung Marr, next to the Yarra River and behind Federation Square. The programme spans music, drawing, puppetry, creative writing and other forms of play, with exhibitions that change over time.

Some activities are designed for children to try things themselves. Past examples include painting on paper fixed to a wall, sending painted balls through nets and using salad spinners as part of a painting activity. Workshops and the playground

ArtPlay runs workshops, events and performances throughout the year. The programme has included storytelling, dance, music and 3D portrait painting, with options for different ages and interests. Some workshops require bookings or registration, so plan ahead if you have a particular session in mind.

The nearby ArtPlay Playground gives families an outdoor option in Birrarung Marr. Children can explore its climbing and balance features, run on the hill and interact with sculptures. The indoor creative spaces and outdoor play area can be combined in one visit.
