Broome sits on the Kimberley coast of Western Australia's far northwest. The town grew on the pearl industry, which drew divers from Japan, Malaysia and other parts of Asia in the late 1800s, and its mix of cultures still shows today. Chinatown is a compact area of shops and places to eat. Broome is also a base for trips into the Kimberley and out to the Dampier Peninsula.
Cable Beach is the town's best-known beach, and sunset camel rides run along its sand. The dry season, roughly April to October, brings warm days and mostly clear skies. In those months, low tides on the mudflats near town can bring the Staircase to the Moon, when moonlight on wet sand forms a pattern that looks like steps. From November to March, the wet season, heat and humidity are high and cyclones are possible. Two to three days is enough for the town, the beaches and a sunset tour. Add more time for the Dampier Peninsula, where distances are long.
Broome in five
- Ride a camel along Cable BeachThe Broome Visitor Centre lists morning, pre-sunset and sunset camel tours along Cable Beach. Sunset is the busiest, so choose a slot early in the day and keep the evening free.
- Use the visitor centre for local bookingThe Broome Visitor Centre describes itself as the place to plan a Broome holiday and offers free booking services and itinerary help. It also lists Chinatown, Town Beach, pearl showrooms and the Dampier Peninsula.Broome Visitor Centre
- Check the Staircase to the Moon datesThe visitor centre publishes dates each year for Staircase to the Moon, when the full moon rises over exposed tidal flats. Plan one evening around the listed date and check the tide time locally.
- Treat the Kimberley as a separate tripBroome is the gateway to the Kimberley and to Kimberley cruises, but the distances are large. Reserve time and road checks for tours that leave town.
- Time your visit for the dry seasonThe wet months bring heat, humidity and storms, and swimming needs more caution. The cooler dry months from about May to September suit beach days and long drives.
