Old Government House and William Robinson Gallery

Visit Brisbane’s 1862 Old Government House for its restored interiors, Queensland history and the William Robinson Gallery. Entry is free.

At Gardens Point on QUT’s campus, Old Government House is a heritage house museum and home to the William Robinson Gallery. Built in 1862 for Queensland’s first governor, Sir George Bowen, it later served as a centre of government and social life. Look for the sandstone exterior, columned foyer and restored interiors, then explore displays on Queensland’s past and Robinson’s paintings, prints, drawings, sculpture and ceramics. Entry is free, and a guided tour adds context to the rooms and artworks.

A house built for Queensland’s first governor

Queensland separated from New South Wales in 1859 and needed a home for its new governor as well as a place for government business. Old Government House was built between 1860 and 1862 for Sir George Bowen, the colony’s first governor. Designed by government architect Charles Tiffin, it became a centre of colonial administration and social life.

The house remained the vice-regal residence for almost 50 years. It later became part of the University of Queensland in 1909, and the university held its first classes there in 1911. Today, the building is on QUT’s Gardens Point campus, where its sandstone walls and columned entrance sit close to the modern city.

The building itself is a central part of the visit. Inside, the grand staircase, high ceilings, entrance-hall carpets and lighting offer details to look for as you move through the house. Displays explain the former uses of different rooms and cover Queensland’s formation and flags. Rooms such as the drawing room, storeroom and servants’ hall help illustrate how the house functioned.

The first floor is home to the William Robinson Gallery, devoted to the Australian artist. Its collection includes paintings, prints, drawings, sculpture and ceramics. The works give the gallery visit a different focus from the house’s colonial history; together, they make it possible to see both the building and an art collection in one stop.
