Institute of Modern Art

Visit Brisbane’s free Institute of Modern Art in Fortitude Valley for changing exhibitions, experimental installations and work by local and international artists.

The Institute of Modern Art (IMA) is a free contemporary art gallery inside the Judith Wright Arts Centre on Brunswick Street in Fortitude Valley. Since 1975, it has presented work by Queensland, Australian and international artists, with exhibitions that can include installations, moving images and sound. The changing programme gives each visit a different focus, and the gallery shop is a useful stop for distinctive gifts. Check the IMA website before you go to see what is on, as the exhibitions and events change.

Institute of Modern Art

The Institute of Modern Art opened in 1975 and has presented exhibitions and offsite projects by artists from Queensland, across Australia and overseas. It is a non-collecting institution, so its programme centres on presenting artists’ work rather than displaying a permanent collection.

The gallery has supported artists through commissions as well as exhibitions. Some projects give artists the chance to develop new work, and the programme connects artistic practice in Queensland with ideas from beyond the region.

Exhibitions and events

The IMA’s programme is built around contemporary art and experimental approaches. Depending on the exhibition, you may encounter installations, photography, moving images, sound art or large-scale sculpture. The subjects and formats change, so check the current programme before setting out if you have a particular interest.

Public events, workshops and talks can accompany exhibitions. The IMA also publishes material and runs programmes that encourage discussion around the work. These activities are not the same for every exhibition, so consult the gallery’s website for what is scheduled during your visit.

Part of the Judith Wright Arts Centre

The gallery is on the ground floor of the Judith Wright Arts Centre in Fortitude Valley. The centre also presents contemporary performance, including cabaret, circus, dance, music, spoken word and multidisciplinary work. This makes it possible to combine a gallery visit with another arts event at the same venue, depending on the programme.

The IMA’s gallery shop sells distinctive gifts and souvenirs. Opening hours are Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 5pm; the gallery is closed on Mondays. Check the IMA website for current exhibition details and event information.
