Iguazú National Park is in the north of Misiones province, in northeastern Argentina’s Mesopotamia region. It covers about 677 km² and protects the Iguazú Falls and the subtropical jungle around them. Inside the park, the Iguazú River bends into a broad U-shape and can reach 1,500 m wide. Across the river, Brazil’s Iguaçu National Park protects the other side. UNESCO declared both parks World Heritage Sites in 1984.
Created in 1934, the park is home to animals such as coatís, toucans and yacare caimans, as well as threatened species including jaguars and harpy eagles. The Rainforest Ecological Train is a related attraction for visiting the park. Ceibo trees line the river banks; their flower is Argentina’s national flower. The name Iguazú comes from Guaraní and means “large water.” Guaraní people arrived in the area around 1,000 CE, and their influence remains visible in the region. Check official park information from Argentina’s National Parks Administration, available in Spanish and English, when planning your visit.

Is the Argentine or Brazilian side of Iguazú better?
Do both if you can. Argentina has more trails and gets you close to the falls, including the Devil's Throat. Brazil has the single wide view and takes half a day.
How many days do I need at Iguazú?
Two days: one full day on the Argentine side and a half day in Brazil. A third day lets you redo the Devil's Throat early.
Do I need a visa to visit the Brazilian side?
It depends on your passport. Check Brazil's entry rules before you go, even for a day visit, and carry your passport.
How do I get from Buenos Aires to Iguazú Falls?
Fly into Iguazú (IGR), about two hours from Buenos Aires. Long-distance buses are far cheaper but take most of a day. Puerto Iguazú is about 20 minutes from the park.
When is the best time to visit Iguazú Falls?
Autumn and spring have mild days and fewer crowds; summer is hot and humid, and July winter holidays are busy. Water volume varies with rainfall, so the falls look different every month.
