Shkodër is a city in northwestern Albania and the seat of Shkodër County, often called the traditional capital of northern Albania. It sits on the Mbishkodra Plain, between the southern end of Lake Shkodër and the foothills of the Albanian Alps. The Buna, Drin and Kir rivers also run through the area. Tirana, the Albanian capital, is about 90 km away.
The city is known for its arts and culture, its religious diversity, and an architecture shaped by mosques and churches. Rozafa Castle stands on a hill in the south of the city, and its museum displays cannonballs from the Ottoman siege of 1478 to 1479. The Mesi Bridge over the Kir has 13 stone arches, and the Marubi National Museum of Photography holds a large collection of Albanian life from 1850 onward. Summers are hot and dry, which suits the lake and coast, while winters are mild and wet. Two days covers the city, and a third day can go to Velipojë beach, about 32 km away.
