Afghanistan

Afghanistan is known for Silk Road ruins, high Hindu Kush valleys and the Band-e Amir lakes, but travel there now means working through serious safety and access limits.

Afghanistan is a landlocked country in Central and South Asia, with Kabul as its capital and largest city. At about 652,864 square kilometers, it is roughly the size of Texas, and most of it is mountainous. The Hindu Kush range splits the northern plains from the southwestern ones. The Silk Road passed through here, and Herat, a center of the Timurid Renaissance, has a rebuilt citadel. The country is also known for saffron, hand-woven carpets and the lakes of Band-e Amir in Bamyan province, known for their colors.

Summers are dry and very hot in the lowlands, and winters are very cold in the highlands, so the season depends on where you go. Trips carry real risks. Armed conflict continues in some regions, earthquakes are frequent in the Hindu Kush, and women face severe limits on education, work and public dress. Tourism is a small industry. Before you plan anything, check current government advice, your travel insurance terms and entry rules.

Five things to know before Afghanistan

  1. Read the current travel advisory first

Governments including the UK and US advise against all travel to all or large parts of Afghanistan. Most travel insurance will not cover you where your government advises against travel. UK travel advice

  2. Check the US advisory as well

The US State Department rates Afghanistan Level 4, do not travel. It lists terrorism, kidnapping and the risk of wrongful detention among the reasons.

  3. Expect little or no consular help

The UK has no embassy in Afghanistan and says its ability to help British nationals there is extremely limited. Many other Western governments are in the same position.

  4. Check visa rules for your passport before you fly

Entry rules for Afghanistan are set by the de facto authorities and can change without notice. Do not rely on older guides or third-party visa sites. Visas and entry

  5. Read your insurance policy before you book

Look for the clause on government travel advice. Specialist cover for high-risk areas exists but is expensive and often excludes the risks that matter most. Travel insurance

Afghanistan FAQ

Is it safe to travel to Afghanistan right now?

The UK advises against all travel to Afghanistan, even on an organized tour, and the US rates it Level 4, do not travel. Read your government's current advisory before making any plans; it is updated more often than any guide.

Will my travel insurance cover Afghanistan?

Usually not. Most standard policies exclude countries or regions where your government advises against all travel, and traveling against that advice can void the whole policy.

Do I need a visa for Afghanistan?

Yes, most visitors need a visa arranged before travel. Rules are set by the de facto authorities and change without notice, so check with an official source for your passport.

Can my embassy help me in Afghanistan?

Often very little. The UK has no embassy there and says consular help is extremely limited; check what your own government says it can do.

What time zone is Afghanistan in?

UTC+4:30 all year, with no daylight saving. That is half an hour behind Pakistan and half an hour ahead of Iran.
