Sanremo is a seaside town in Liguria, northwestern Italy, in the province of Imperia. It sits on the Italian Riviera and is also spelled San Remo. European aristocrats and Russian nobility came for its mild climate in the 19th century, and the town grew as a winter resort. Sanremo is also called the City of Flowers (Città dei Fiori), a nickname earned by its flower growing.
A slow coastal stay suits Sanremo well. Climb to La Pigna, the walled hilltop village of winding streets, then walk down to the seafront and the Art Nouveau Municipal Casino. The old railway line along the coast is now a cycle and walking route, with hire kiosks along the way. Winters are mild with snow rare, and July and August average near 24°C. Two or three days covers the old town, the seafront and one day in the hills.
