Paço Alfândega - Office e Mall

Explore Paço Alfândega in Recife Antigo, a mall in a restored historic building with baroque architecture, a foreign-language bookstore and free river views.

Paço Alfândega is a shopping and cultural space in Recife Antigo, set inside a restored historic building on the Capibaribe River. Its baroque architecture gives the mall a distinctive setting for browsing shops, cafés and restaurants. Head to the top floor for a free view over the river, bridges and historic buildings. The mall also has a bookstore with a selection of English and other foreign-language books, plus a library to explore. It is a useful stop for a break between nearby sights.

From religious residence to customs house

The building was originally constructed beside the Capibaribe River to house members of the Congregation of Oratories, also known as the Order of São Felipe Nery. In 1826, it became the Customs House of Pernambuco. Its history is part of what makes a visit different from a standard mall stop: the shopping spaces now sit within a building with an earlier civic and religious role.

The structure is recognised as a national historic heritage site. Restoration and adaptation work prepared it for a new use, and it opened as a shopping centre in late 2003. The result brings contemporary shops and places to eat into a historic setting.

The building’s formal baroque architecture is a key reason to look beyond the shop windows as you walk through. Its historic character contrasts with the modern retail spaces inside, and the central atrium is one of the areas used for events and fairs.

Make your way to the highest floor for views across the Capibaribe River, its bridges and the surrounding historic buildings. Access to the viewpoint is free. The rooftop view makes Paço Alfândega a good place to pause while exploring Recife Antigo, even if shopping is not your main reason for stopping.

Bookshops, food and cultural events

Paço Alfândega brings together shops, cafés and restaurants, with a food court for a more casual meal. The bookstore has a selection of books in English and other foreign languages, and a library inside the mall is another place to browse. Cultural experiences are part of the mix too, including the option of ordering a philosophical coffee.

The building hosts trade fairs and other events during the year. Activities for children have also been held in the central atrium on weekends and during festivals. Check what is scheduled before going if an exhibition or event would shape your visit. Paço Alfândega is close to Madre de Deus Church, making it easy to combine the two stops.
