Whitesands Bay

Visit Whitesands Bay near St Davids for surfing, broad golden sand and coastal walks, with views towards Carn Llidi and Ramsey Island.

Whitesands Bay is a broad sandy beach near St Davids, on the Pembrokeshire coast. Carn Llidi rises behind the shore, while Ramsey Island lies offshore. Come for surfing, bodyboarding and swimming, or follow the sand towards shallow caves and join the Pembrokeshire Coast Path for cliff-top views. A cafe and toilets are on site, and there is a car park. The beach is popular in fine weather, so a quieter visit is easier outside the summer rush.

Whitesands Bay

Whitesands Bay, also called Porth Mawr, lies on the St Davids Peninsula in Pembrokeshire. Its broad sweep of sand curves towards the rocky headland of St Davids Head, with the craggy hill of Carn Llidi behind it. Across the water, you can see Ramsey Island and the rocky islets known as the Bishops and Clerks.

The beach faces west and is exposed to Atlantic weather. Its size gives you room to walk, paddle or settle on the sand, but fine summer days draw families and watersports enthusiasts. For a quieter stretch of shore, the southern coves are less busy than the northern end. Porthmelgan, reached by following the coast path north for around ten minutes, has sand at low tide, caves and a waterfall.

Surfing and swimming

The main surf break is at the northern end of the beach. Surfers, bodyboarders, kayakers and canoeists all use the bay, and the surf can suit a range of abilities. Conditions change, though: the north end can have strong currents and fast, powerful waves, so take particular care if you swim or are new to the water.

The beach is also used for swimming and paddling. Lifeguards are present during the summer season, but conditions at sea can still be demanding. When the beach is busy, different watersports may be assigned zones. Check local signs before heading into the water or setting up equipment.

Coastal walks and local landmarks

The Pembrokeshire Coast Path runs along the bay, with routes towards St Davids Head and Porthmelgan. The walk to St Davids Head climbs over heather-covered cliffs and brings views across the coast; some sections are hilly and rocky. On a clear day, views from the wider headland route can reach as far as Ireland’s Wicklow Mountains.

Whitesands is close to St Davids, making it easy to combine a beach visit with time in the city. One suggested route starts by St Davids Cathedral and takes about an hour across country and coast to the bay. At the north end of the beach are the remains of a chapel associated with St Patrick. The bay is also linked to the tradition that Patrick sailed from here on his mission to convert Ireland, though accounts place that departure in different centuries.

Facilities and planning your stop

There is a car park, a cafe and public toilets at the beach. Parking is paid, and toilet use has been reported to cost 40p, so bring change. The cafe is a convenient place to get refreshments without leaving the shore.

Summer brings the busiest conditions, particularly when the weather is fine and the surf is up. If you prefer a quieter walk, consider visiting outside the peak summer period; November has also been suggested as a less crowded time. The bay is a good starting point for exploring nearby St Davids or continuing on foot to Porthmelgan.
