New Mexico is a state in the American Southwest, bordering Arizona, Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah and the Mexican state of Chihuahua. Pueblo communities have lived in the region for centuries, followed by Spanish colonial settlement and later Mexican and US rule. Santa Fe, the state capital, is known for low adobe buildings, a historic plaza and a gallery district on Canyon Road. Albuquerque, the largest city, has a historic Old Town and hosts the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta each October. Taos, to the north, is known for Taos Pueblo, a living community and UNESCO World Heritage Site, and for the Rio Grande Gorge nearby.
The state suits trips built around culture, food and open landscapes more than beaches or nightlife. Chaco Culture National Historical Park protects ancient Puebloan ruins, White Sands National Park has white gypsum dunes, and Carlsbad Caverns is in the southeast. Green chile is the signature ingredient in local cooking, served in stews and on eggs. Plan at least a week to reach the north and south, or four to five days for Santa Fe and Taos alone. Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons. Summer is hot in the lower desert, and winter brings snow to the mountains.
