Boundary Waters

Travelers come to Boundary Waters to paddle between lakes, carry canoes over portages, and spend days where no roads reach.

Boundary Waters is a wilderness area in northeastern Minnesota, on the border with Canada and inside Superior National Forest. It covers more than a million acres of forest, rock ridges and connected lakes. The Canadian side continues as Quetico Provincial Park. Most of the area has no roads and limits motors, so you travel by canoe, paddling between lakes and carrying your gear over portages, the short stretches of land between water.

Most trips happen in summer, when the lakes are open for paddling. Experienced travelers also go in winter on skis or snowshoes, with more preparation. Overnight trips need a permit, and some entry points use quotas in the busy months, so plan ahead. Three to five days covers a short loop, and a week or more allows a longer route with more lakes. The area suits experienced paddlers and families comfortable with camping. It is a poor fit for anyone who wants a hotel, short walks or a car at the campsite.

  1. Book an overnight permit on Recreation.govOvernight trips need a wilderness entry permit, and many entry points cap how many groups start each day. Book on recreation.gov before you arrive.
  2. Carry a paper map and a compassPhone signal is patchy or missing across most canoe routes, so offline maps alone are not enough. Keep a waterproof paper map and compass in a dry bag.Phones and eSIM
  3. Get a Minnesota fishing license before you castAnglers 16 and older need a Minnesota fishing license, which is separate from your wilderness permit. Buy it from the Minnesota DNR before you fish any lake.
  4. Hang food and scented items at nightBlack bears live in the area, and food left near camp draws them in. Hang food and toiletries out of reach or use a bear-resistant container, and pack out all trash.
  5. Pack for the portagesRoutes cross land between lakes, and you carry canoes and packs over each portage. Pack light, use a yoke for the canoe and keep heavy items in one bag per carry.

Calm lakes and short portages suit a beginner, especially with an outfitter. Less experienced paddlers should avoid big, windy lakes and choose a short route.
