Dubai is the most populous city in the United Arab Emirates and the capital of the Emirate of Dubai. On the southeastern Persian Gulf coast, it grew from a pearling and fishing village into a trade hub after declaring itself a free port in 1901. Today, tourism, aviation, financial services, real estate and shopping are major parts of its economy. Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, opened in 2010. Its At The Top observation deck has an outdoor terrace.

For a different view of the city’s trading past, take an abra across Dubai Creek and visit the souks on its banks. Deira’s Gold Souk has nearly 250 gold shops. Dubai also has beaches, a dense skyline and sandy desert to the south. Winter is mild to warm, with average highs of 24 °C in January, the coolest month. Summer is extremely hot and humid, with average highs around 40 °C and lows around 30 °C in August. If outdoor plans are a priority, winter brings milder temperatures than summer. Dubai has a Red and Green metro line, as well as taxis, buses and water transport.

    Dubai in five

    1. Ride the Metro from the airportThe Red Line stops at Terminals 1 and 3 and runs to Downtown and the Marina. Buy a Nol card for the Metro and buses.
    2. Book the Burj Khalifa observation deck aheadTickets are timed and sunset slots cost more and sell out first.
    3. Cross the Creek by abraThe small wooden boats link Bur Dubai and Deira, near the souqs and Al Fahidi.
    4. Know the public conduct rulesDrink alcohol only in licensed venues, dress modestly in malls and old areas, and do not eat or drink in public view during Ramadan daylight hours.
    5. Check flight and insurance terms for regional disruptionThe UK reports periodic airspace closures and cancelled flights across the Gulf since July 2026. Read the current advice, and book flexible fares where you can.UK travel advice
