Trincomalee is a port town on Sri Lanka's north-east coast, in the Eastern Province. Go for the reef at Pigeon Island National Park, a short boat ride offshore, and for whale-watching trips that leave from the harbor. The town sits on a peninsula, where Fort Frederick stands on Konesar Hill and the Koneswaram temple is on Swami Rock, a short walk apart.
Plan one or two days for the town, the fort, the temple and the bus stand area, then spend the rest on the beaches at Uppuveli and Nilaveli and on the boats. Two to three nights covers that. Buses reach the town centre near the bus stand, so onward rides are easy to find. The north-east monsoon brings most rain from October to January, so the drier months from May to September suit a beach and snorkel trip better.

Trincomalee FAQ
Is Trincomalee worth visiting?
Yes for a reef, a harbor fort and a quieter coast. Pigeon Island holds over 100 coral species according to Sri Lanka Tourism, and the CCF describes the fort and Koneswaram Temple on Swami Rock. Skip it from October to January, when the heaviest rain falls.
What is the best time to visit Trincomalee?
The Department of Census and Statistics' long-term rainfall figures are lowest from March to July, and stay modest through September. October to December brings the most rain. Confirm sea conditions with your boat operator before you book.
How do you get to Pigeon Island from Trincomalee?
Sri Lanka Tourism says visitors rent a boat from Nilaveli Beach. Nilaveli is a separate beach area from the town, so plan a ride out, and check the park's current entry fee and hours with the DWC before you pay for a boat.
Can you see whales from Trincomalee?
Sri Lanka Tourism names Trincomalee, with Dondra Point, as an ideal whale-watching location. It does not give a Trincomalee season, so ask the operator, and choose a boat that follows the SLTDA distance and life-jacket rules.
Is Trincomalee safe for tourists?
The FCDO regional page, linked in the essentials above, covers the east, and it also warns of strong surf and rip tides at times on many beaches, so ask your hotel or boat operator before you swim.
