Praiano is a town on the Amalfi Coast, between Amalfi and Positano, in the province of Salerno. Its whole municipal area falls within the coast's UNESCO World Heritage Site, listed since 1997. The comune also includes the hamlets of Marina di Praia and Vettica Maggiore, each with its own church and festivals.
Visitors come for the churches and the coast road, the SS 163 Amalfitana. The Church of San Luca Evangelista dates to 1123 and holds 16th-century paintings by Giovanni Bernardo Lama. The Church of San Giovanni Battista has a maiolica tiled floor from the 12th and 13th centuries. Summer is hot and dry, with an average of about 26.8 °C in August, while more than 1,700 mm of rain a year falls mostly in autumn, winter and spring. Three or four nights leaves time for the churches and the coast.
Praiano in five
- Choose it as a base, not a day tripMost of the pleasure is the evening light and the quiet after day-trippers leave. The coast bus passes along the road, so Positano and Amalfi are short rides away.Positano
- Walk down to Marina di PraiaThe small cove with a pebble beach and boats sits at the foot of a stairway, with a few places to eat. Allow time for the climb back, or ask a taxi in advance for luggage.
- Check where the bus stopsStops lie along the coast road, and your hotel may be above or below the road. Ask for the nearest stop and the stairs before booking.Amalfi Coast
- Book a sunset tableSunset terraces fill in summer, and many restaurants and hotels close outside the season. Check opening dates before you travel in spring or late autumn.

Is Praiano a good base for the Amalfi Coast?
Yes, if you want quiet evenings and lower prices and do not mind the bus. It sits between Positano and Amalfi, so both are short rides, but you will need to climb stairs to reach many rooms.
Is Praiano better than Positano?
It is calmer and cheaper, with good sunsets, but it has fewer shops, restaurants and beach clubs. Positano wins for atmosphere and a first visit; Praiano wins for a slow, quieter stay.
What is there to do in Praiano?
Swim and sunbathe at Marina di Praia, walk the cliff stairs and lanes and watch the sunset from a terrace. It is a base for the coast rather than a destination with sights of its own.
How do you get to Praiano?
By coast bus from Sorrento or Amalfi, or by seasonal boat on some routes to Marina di Praia. There is no train station, so ride to Sorrento or Salerno and change. Check timetables the evening before.
Is Praiano good for families?
It can be, but the stairs are a challenge with strollers and young children. Choose a hotel at road level, check access to the cove and plan beach days around the climb.
