The Cayman Islands are three low islands in the Caribbean, a British Overseas Territory about 240 kilometers south of Cuba. Grand Cayman, the largest and most visited, has Seven Mile Beach on its western shore and George Town, the capital, where the government sits. Cayman Brac and Little Cayman lie to the northeast and are smaller and quieter.
Most trips center on the water. Snorkelers and divers use the reefs of the marine park, and Stingray City, a shallow sandbar reached by boat from Grand Cayman, is where visitors stand in the water among stingrays. Grand Cayman suits a first visit because it has the beaches, restaurants and hotels. The dry season, roughly December to April, brings the least rain. Hurricane season runs June to November.
Five things to know before Cayman Islands
- Check entry for your passport
UK and Canadian passports do not need a visa for tourist stays of up to 6 months. Carry a return ticket and proof you can fund your stay. Check other passports on the Cayman Islands government site. Official entry rules
- Convert Cayman prices before you order
Check whether a price is in Cayman dollars (CI$) or US dollars. The Cayman dollar is worth more than the US dollar, so a CI$ price is higher than it looks in US dollars. Money
- Drive on the left
Cayman drives on the left, with many roundabouts on Grand Cayman. Public minibuses run from George Town along the main roads, but a car is easier for the East End.
- Follow the marine park rules
Much of the coast is protected marine park, with limits on fishing, anchoring and taking marine life. Use moorings and ask your dive operator about the local rules.
- Book around hurricane season
Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, with most storms from August to October. Buy insurance when you book and check how it handles storm cancellations. Travel insurance

Cayman Islands FAQ
Do I need a visa for the Cayman Islands?
Not with a UK or Canadian passport for tourist stays of up to 6 months. You need a passport valid beyond your return date, a return ticket and, if asked, proof of funds. Check other passports on the government site.
Is the Cayman dollar worth more than the US dollar?
Yes. The Cayman dollar is worth more than the US dollar, so check which currency a menu or price tag uses before you pay.
When is hurricane season in the Cayman Islands?
June 1 to November 30, with the highest risk from August to October. December to April is drier and calmer, and prices are highest then; May and June are a good compromise.
Are Cayman Brac and Little Cayman worth visiting?
For divers and people who want quiet, yes. They are a short domestic flight from Grand Cayman, with few hotels and very little nightlife.
