Nha Trang is a beach city on the East Sea in Khánh Hòa province, south-central Vietnam. Its long curved bay, seafront promenade and boat operators running out to the islands are the main draw. The Cham brick towers at Po Nagar, built by the Cham people, and the mud baths in town add a cultural side. Since June 2025, the name also belongs to a ward: Nha Trang ward, the provincial administrative centre, formed by merging five former wards of Nha Trang city.
Plan the trip around the beaches, with time set aside for one island boat trip and the towers. Two to four nights covers that. The drier months run roughly from January to August, while September to December brings heavier rain. Cam Ranh airport sits south of the city, so arrange the transfer before you land.
Nha Trang in five
- Plan the islands as an early boat dayNha Trang Bay holds 19 islands and islets, and Hon Mun is about 45 minutes by boat from Cau Da port. Some islands, such as Hon Yen, are reached by morning boats, so ask which pier and departure time before you book.
- See Po Nagar Cham Towers first thingFour brick towers from the 7th to 12th centuries stand above the estuary, and pilgrims still pray there. Go early, before the crowds and the heat, and dress modestly.Phan Rang and Thap Cham
- Fly to Cam Ranh and book the transferThe airport is at Cam Ranh, about 30 km from the center. Coastal trains and buses from Da Lat and Hoi An are the other ways in, so pick the route that matches where you are coming from.
- Watch the September to December rainsThe tourism board gives September to December as Nha Trang's rainy season, with the south coast less storm-prone than the north. Island hopping is described as best from February to August.Best time to visit Vietnam
- Keep a mud bath for a gray afternoonThe hot-spring and mud-bath centers sit in the hills north of the city, and Thap Ba is about 6 km out. Book a private tub if you want quiet, and rinse before the mineral pool.

Is Nha Trang worth visiting?
Yes for a beach and island trip. The tourism board calls it the sunniest city in the country, and the bay has 19 islands. Skip it if you want empty sand or a heritage town like Hoi An; the southern coast is quieter.
How many days do you need in Nha Trang?
Three days: one for Po Nagar, Long Son Pagoda and the seafront, one for an island boat trip, and one for a mud bath or beach. Add a fourth night if you want to sleep on an island.
What is the best time to visit Nha Trang?
February to August is the tourism board's prime window for island hopping, with diving popular from January to October. September to December is the wet season, though the south coast gets fewer heavy storms than the north.
How far is Cam Ranh airport from Nha Trang?
About 30 km from the city center. Arrange a taxi, shuttle or hotel transfer before you land, since the road trip is long enough that a metered ride adds up.
Is Nha Trang or Phu Quoc better for a beach holiday?
Nha Trang suits a first trip that mixes city, islands and easy rail or bus links. Phu Quoc has longer beaches and sunsets over the water. The two are compared by season and travel time in a separate guide.
