Statue de Freddie Mercury

Freddie Mercury statue in Montreux, on the Lake Geneva promenade. See the 3 m bronze, Alpine views and fan tributes, best at sunset.

The Freddie Mercury statue stands on Montreux's lakefront promenade at Place du Marché, beside the old covered market. The bronze figure is about three metres tall and faces Lake Geneva, with snow-covered Alps rising across the water. Mercury lived in Montreux from 1979 until his death in 1991, and Queen recorded several albums at Mountain Studios nearby. Fans leave flowers, banners and small tokens at its base, so the statue feels personal as well as photogenic. Go at sunset for the light over the lake and mountains.

Freddie Mercury and Montreux

Mercury made Montreux his sanctuary and creative home from 1979 until his death in 1991. He came to the town for its peace and quiet, and he bought an apartment there shortly before he died.

Queen recorded several albums at Mountain Studios, which is located inside the Montreux Casino. Made in Heaven, the last album Mercury recorded, was also made there. That link is why the town still sees the band as part of its story.

The statue and its setting

The town unveiled the bronze statue at the water's edge in November 1996, five years after Mercury's death. It stands in the central part of the embankment, on the same square as the city market and the indoor Marché Couvert.

Fresh flowers are placed at its feet throughout the year. Fans also leave poems and notes in his memory, and the offerings are a large part of what gives the site its character. The statue faces the lake, so the best view of it is from the promenade in front.

Walking the promenade

The lakeside promenade is flat, lined with palm trees and easy to walk in either direction. Walking east leads toward Chillon Castle, and walking the other way leads toward Vevey. The train from Montreux to Vevey takes about 10 minutes, and Vevey is known for its giant fork sculpture, La Fourche, which stands in the water by the lake.

In winter, the promenade becomes a Christmas market with a ferris wheel, warm drinks and lights framing the snowy mountains. The area gets busy at that time, so plan extra time for the walk.

Queen: The Studio Experience

The exhibition is inside Montreux Casino, in the space where the Mountain Recording studio was. It houses Queen memorabilia, costumes, records, photos and mementos, along with the studio's original mixing desk.

It adds context to the statue. A visit gives you a clearer picture of the years Mercury spent in Montreux and the work the band did there.

Visiting the tributes respectfully

The flowers, banners and notes at the statue come from fans who travel there from around the world. Look at them, take photos from the path, and leave the tributes where they are. Moving or taking items from the base is not appropriate, and it is better to bring a token only if you plan to leave it in place.
