Hermanus is a seaside town on the Overberg coast of the Western Cape, South Africa, about 120 km southeast of Cape Town. Its main draw is the sea in the cooler months. Southern right whales come close to shore in Walker Bay, and you can often watch them from the cliff path or the rocks without a boat. The town is also known for its whale crier, who announces sightings with a kelp horn.
Hermanus suits a slow trip of two to four days. Days can go to the cliff path, the Old Harbour and the Fernkloof Nature Reserve, with its fynbos and walking trails, and afternoons can go to wine farms in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. Walker Bay also has great white sharks, and some operators offer shark-viewing trips. The best season for whales is roughly June to November, when southern rights are most likely to be seen.

Read the guideHermanus FAQ
Is Hermanus worth visiting?
Yes, for coastal walks, seafood and whale watching in season. It suits a few nights rather than a long beach holiday, and a car helps for the wine farms and coastal drives.
When are the whales in Hermanus?
Southern right whales come into Walker Bay mostly from June to November. Sightings depend on the whales, so keep a spare day.
Can you visit Hermanus as a day trip from Cape Town?
Yes, by car in about 1.5 to 2 hours each way, or on a tour. It is a long day, so a night or two in town lets you watch from the cliffs at dawn or dusk.
What is the Whale Crier?
The Whale Crier is a local tradition in which a town crier sounds a kelp horn when whales are spotted near the shore. Listen for the horn when you are walking the cliff path.
Do you need a car in Hermanus?
You can walk the town centre and harbour, but a car is needed for the wine farms and the coast beyond town. Parking can be busy in the whale season.
