Sirmione is a comune in the province of Brescia, in Lombardy, on the southern shore of Lake Garda, close to the Veneto border. A narrow peninsula about 4 km long runs into the lake, and the historic centre sits on it. The Scaligero Castle guards the entrance. It is a fortress with a moat and two drawbridges, built as a port fortress for the Scaliger fleet of Verona, and its keep rises about 47 metres.
The Grottoes of Catullo, a Roman villa at the tip of the peninsula built between the late 1st century BC and the 1st century AD, are the main Roman site. The poet Catullus is traditionally linked to it, though that link is not certain. Tourism is the main economic activity, drawn by the Roman remains, the castle and the thermal spring. The sulphurous, brominated water is served by two spas, Catullo and Virgilio. A day trip covers the castle and the ruins. An overnight stay gives you time to walk the peninsula at a slower pace. The local urban bus runs only in spring and summer.
Sirmione in five
- Arrive early or stay the nightThe lanes fill from late morning in summer, and parking is limited. A night puts you on the peninsula when day trippers leave, with quiet lakeside walks at dusk.
- Visit the Scaligero Castle and the Grotte di CatulloThe castle sits at the entrance, and the ruins of a Roman villa lie at the tip of the peninsula. Check the official sites for hours and tickets, which vary by season and weekday.
- Leave the car outside the old townThe historic center is restricted and parking is paid and fills early in summer. Use a car park near the entrance or take a bus from the mainland, and ask your hotel about access.
- Take the bus or boat from Peschiera or DesenzanoTrains stop at Peschiera del Garda or Desenzano, and local buses and lake boats cover the last stretch. Check the day's schedule, since boats run less often off-season.Lake Garda
- Book spa time or a lake cruise ahead in summerThermal spas and boat tours sell out on weekends from June to September. Compare cancellation terms if the weather is unsettled.

Read the guideSirmione FAQ
Is Sirmione worth visiting?
Yes for the castle, the setting and the lake views, but it is crowded in summer. Go early or stay the night, and skip it on peak weekends if you dislike queues.
Can you visit Sirmione as a day trip from Verona?
Yes. Take a train to Peschiera del Garda, then a local bus or boat, which takes about 1 to 1.5 hours each way. Start early to beat the crowds.
How do you get to Sirmione without a car?
By train to Desenzano or Peschiera, then a bus or boat to the peninsula. Boats are scenic but slower; check the timetable for the last return.
Is Sirmione expensive?
Rooms in the old town cost more than in Desenzano or Peschiera, and restaurants near the castle charge a premium. Stay on the mainland to save money and visit in the morning.
How long do you need in Sirmione?
Half a day covers the castle, the lanes and a walk to the Grotte di Catullo. Stay a night if you want the spa or an evening without the crowds.
