Bujumbura is Burundi's largest city and its economic center. Burundi is a small, landlocked country in East Africa, and Bujumbura sits on the northeastern shore of Lake Tanganyika, one of the oldest and deepest lakes in the world. Hills rise behind the city. The lake is shared with Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Zambia. Bujumbura was the capital until 2019, when Gitega became the seat of government.
People come for the lakeshore and the local markets. Bujumbura works well as a stay of two or three days, or as a base for trips to the lake and the Rusizi River delta. The drier months from June to August are the most comfortable time to visit. Check your government's current travel advice for Burundi before you book, because security can change at short notice.
