Shoalwater Islands Marine Park lies off the coast of Rockingham, about a 45-minute drive south of Perth. It covers around 6,658 hectares, extending roughly three kilometres offshore from Point Becher. A line of limestone rocks and islands runs parallel to the coast, with Penguin Island among them.

The park protects both marine and land wildlife. Its clear coastal water and long beaches draw people for swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, diving and other water activities. The islands and shore also offer places to watch birds and take a break by the sea.

Snorkeling and wildlife

Point Peron and nearby Mushroom Rock are snorkeling spots where limestone has formed small caves and overhangs close to shore. The water around these formations is no deeper than five metres. Sea urchins, anemones, spider crabs, tropical fish and colourful sponges can be found in the area.

Penguin Island is home to little penguins. Dolphins and sea lions are also seen in the park, alongside pelicans and other birds. Wildlife sightings are not guaranteed, so give animals space and bring binoculars if you would like to watch birds from the coast. Kayak tours and boat trips can take you around more of the islands; check the weather before setting out, since wind can affect water activities.
