Lawrence is a college city in Douglas County, in northeast Kansas, about 40 miles west of Kansas City, Missouri. The University of Kansas sits on Mount Oread above downtown. Lawrence was founded in 1854 by antislavery settlers from New England, and it became a center of the Free State cause during the conflict over slavery in Kansas Territory. The town's history includes a deadly 1863 raid by pro-slavery guerrillas that burned much of downtown.
Most visits center on Massachusetts Street, the main downtown strip of local shops, bars and restaurants. On campus, the Spencer Museum of Art is open to visitors, and the Watkins Museum of History covers local history downtown. Clinton Lake, a short drive south, has boating, swimming and hiking. Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons. Two days is enough for the town and a lake day. Lawrence suits travelers who want a college town with history and an easy base for a Kansas City trip.
