Lafayette is the largest city in the Acadiana region of south-central Louisiana and the seat of Lafayette Parish. It sits in Cajun country, where the descendants of Acadians, French settlers who came from Acadia in what is now Atlantic Canada, still shape the food, the music and the French some families speak at home. Boudin, crawfish, gumbo and étouffée are common on local menus, and restaurants and dance halls play Cajun and zydeco music.
Visitors come for the food, live music and bayou country around the city. The Acadian Cultural Center, in Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve, covers Acadian history and is in Lafayette. The Atchafalaya Basin, a large wetland, is within driving distance. Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons, while summers are hot and humid.

Is Lafayette worth visiting?
Yes, for Cajun food, live music and festivals, and as a base for swamp and bayou trips. The city is smaller and quieter than New Orleans, so it suits a slower trip.
How do you get to Lafayette?
Fly into Lafayette Regional Airport (LFT), or into New Orleans and drive about 2 hours west. Baton Rouge is about an hour away by car. A rental car is the simplest option from the airport.
Do you need a car in Lafayette?
Yes for most trips. Downtown is walkable in parts, but the bayous, the basin and the nearby towns are a drive away.
How many days do you need in Lafayette?
Two to three days covers downtown, a music night and a half day on the bayou or in the basin. Add a day for Vermilionville or a drive to Avery Island.
When is the best time to visit Lafayette?
March to May and October to November, when days are warm and humidity is lower. Summer is hot and humid, and storms run into the fall.
Is Lafayette or New Orleans better?
New Orleans is the bigger city with more hotels and sights. Lafayette suits travelers who want Cajun music, food and bayou trips at a slower pace.
