Iowa City sits on the Iowa River in eastern Iowa. The University of Iowa shapes much of the town, with students filling its bookshops and cafes and a compact downtown that is easy to cover on foot. The city was Iowa's capital until 1857. The Old Capitol Building, completed in 1842, still stands on the university campus and is the best place to start for the city's early history.

Iowa City is also a literary town. It was named a UNESCO City of Literature in 2008, and the Iowa Writers' Workshop, founded in 1936, has brought writers to town for decades. Visitors come for the campus, the Pedestrian Mall, museums and the countryside nearby, including the Amana Colonies to the west. The town suits a city break, a college visit or a few days of slow walking and eating. Late spring through early fall is the most comfortable season, and two or three days is enough to cover the city itself.

May, June, September and October are the most comfortable months. Football season and graduation weekends bring the biggest crowds, so book early for those dates.
