Serra do Pilar Monastery

Visit Serra do Pilar Monastery in Vila Nova de Gaia for its rare circular church and cloister, plus wide views of Porto, the Douro and Dom Luís I Bridge.

Serra do Pilar Monastery stands above the Douro in Vila Nova de Gaia, across the river from Porto. Its church and cloister share a rare circular plan, and the terrace outside gives a broad view of Porto’s historic centre, the Douro and the Dom Luís I Bridge. The monastery is part of Porto’s UNESCO World Heritage area. The interior is closed to visitors, but you can still walk around the outside and enjoy the architecture and elevated viewpoint.

Serra do Pilar Monastery is in Vila Nova de Gaia, on the south bank of the Douro River opposite Porto. Set on high ground above the Dom Luís I Bridge, it is part of the historic area recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. The monastery’s position has given it both religious and military importance over time.

Construction began in 1538. The circular church was inaugurated in 1672, and work on the monastery continued into the late 17th century. Some accounts give different completion dates for separate stages of the complex, so the building’s development is best understood as a long process rather than a single construction date.

The church and cloister are both circular, an unusual arrangement in Portugal. The church’s design was based on Santa Maria Redonda in Rome, and its round form is visible from across the river and from the Dom Luís I Bridge.

The interior is not open to visitors. The outdoor area remains accessible, letting you view the monastery’s exterior and take in the setting without entering the building. The church and cloister are the architectural features that distinguish the complex from more conventional monastery layouts.

Views from the terrace

The terrace looks across the Douro to Porto’s historic centre and the Ribeira district, with the Dom Luís I Bridge close below. From this elevated position, you can also see the riverbanks and, in the distance, the Arrábida Bridge. It is a useful stop for taking in how Porto and Gaia sit on opposite sides of the river.

The viewpoint faces west, making sunset a popular time to visit. Jardim do Morro is just below the monastery and gives you another place to watch the evening light over the city.

Getting to the viewpoint

You can walk up from Jardim do Morro or cross the upper level of the Dom Luís I Bridge from Porto and continue uphill on the Gaia side. The route around the riverfront and historic centre includes steep sections, so allow for the climb.

The Gaia cable car runs from the Douro riverfront to the upper part of Vila Nova de Gaia; the journey takes about five minutes. The metro’s yellow line, line D, stops at Jardim do Morro, close to the monastery. The monastery is at Largo Aviz in Vila Nova de Gaia.
