Le Morne Brabant is a steep basalt mountain on a peninsula at the southwest tip of Mauritius, an island in the Indian Ocean. The summit rises about 556 meters (1,824 feet) above the sea, and the peninsula runs out to a wide lagoon. Enslaved Africans who escaped plantation life, known as maroons, sought refuge in the mountain's cliffs and forests. The Le Morne Cultural Landscape was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2008 because of that connection.
Hikers come for a demanding climb with coastal views. The summit trail is steep and rocky, and a registered guide is required to walk it. Weather can close the trail, so check conditions before you plan a day around the climb. Beaches, lagoon swimming and kitesurfing sit along the peninsula. The cooler, drier months from May to August suit the climb best. Plan a half day for the summit.

Can you climb Le Morne Brabant without a guide?
No. The climb is done with a registered guide, and independent hiking up the mountain is not allowed. Book the guide through a tour operator or a local guide service before you travel.
Is Le Morne Brabant worth climbing?
Yes, if you want the view over the lagoon and the story of the maroon refuge on the mountain. Skip it in heavy rain or if steep, rocky ground is too hard for you.
Why is Le Morne Brabant a UNESCO site?
It was inscribed in 2008 as a cultural landscape linked to the maroons, enslaved people who escaped and hid on the mountain.

What is the best time of year to climb Le Morne Brabant?
The cooler, drier months from about May to August suit the climb best. Cyclone season runs roughly from November to April, so check warnings closely during those months.
Can you swim at Le Morne?
