Bishkek is the capital of Kyrgyzstan, in the north of the country on the Chui Valley plain. The Kyrgyz Ala-Too range of the Tian Shan rises just south of the city, so snowy peaks show above many streets on clear days. Much of the center dates from the Soviet period, with wide avenues, parks and squares that are easy to walk. Daily life centers on the markets, especially Osh Bazaar, where stalls sell fruit, bread, spices and household goods.
Most travelers use Bishkek as a first stop or a base. Try beshbarmak, a dish of boiled meat and broad noodles, and laghman, a noodle dish, and sample kumis, fermented mare's milk, if you want something local. Spring and early autumn are the most comfortable seasons, with warm summers and cold winters. Spend two or three days in the city, then head out to Ala-Archa National Park, a short drive south, or to Issyk-Kul lake. This suits travelers who like walkable cities, markets and a slower start before the mountains.

Is Bishkek worth visiting?
Yes, for two or three days. It works best as a base for mountain day trips and a look at everyday city life.
How many days do you need in Bishkek?
Two days covers the centre and the bazaars. Add a day for Ala-Archa, and more if you plan to go on to Issyk-Kul.
Do I need a visa for Kyrgyzstan?
Many passports enter visa-free, while others need an e-visa from the official portal. Check your passport's group there before you book flights.
Can I pay by card in Bishkek?
Hotels and larger shops take cards, but bazaars, minibuses and many small cafés need som in cash. Carry small notes.
How do I get from Bishkek to Issyk-Kul?
By shared minibus or hired car. The road takes about 5 to 6 hours, so staying overnight on the lake is more comfortable than a day return.
