Suchitoto is a colonial town in the Cuscatlán area of central El Salvador, about 388 meters above sea level. Its historic center is a grid of paved streets lined with houses that have wide corridors and clay-tile roofs, and the urban core has been protected as a historic ensemble since 1997. Indigo was a major crop in the region from the 17th century, and the town was one of its main production centers.

Plan one or two nights. Most of the day goes to walking the center, visiting museums and arts spaces, and eating at restaurants and cafés. A day trip can take you to Ciudad Vieja, the ruins of the 1528 San Salvador settlement about 12 km from town, or to Lake Suchitlán, an artificial reservoir reached in part by a vehicle ferry from Puerto San Juan. The dry season, roughly November to April, suits lake and hiking days better than the rainy months.

By car or by bus from San Salvador. Bus routes and times change, so confirm the current service with your lodging before you travel.

Is Ciudad Vieja worth a trip?
