Cahuita is a small town on Costa Rica's Caribbean coast, in Limón Province, beside Cahuita National Park. Here the park's rainforest trails reach the sea, and coral reefs lie off Punta Cahuita. The town has an Afro-Caribbean community, and its food, music and English-based Creole speech set it apart from much of the country.

People come for snorkeling, wildlife seen on the park trails and Afro-Caribbean cooking. The town is small enough to walk, and it moves at an easy pace, which suits a two- or three-night stop or a longer stay with few plans. Rain falls on this coast in most months, and its wet and dry periods do not follow the Pacific side, so check recent rainfall before you book beach days. Pack insect repellent and sun protection for the trails.

Cahuita FAQ

When is the best time to visit Cahuita?

February to March and September to October are the relatively dry periods, according to Costa Rica's tourism board. Rain stays steady all year, so choose by crowds and flexibility as well as weather.

Is Cahuita worth visiting?

Yes for a quiet base beside a national park with coral reef, trails and Caribbean food. Skip it for long swim-and-surf weeks, since sea conditions change often and facilities are modest.

Is Cahuita safe for tourists?

Keep a low profile in this small town: Canada's travel advice names it among Caribbean areas of concern for theft. Skip empty beaches at night, use official taxis and book snorkeling with an established company.

Can you snorkel in Cahuita?

The tourism board notes live coral reefs around Punta Cahuita. UK advice urges extra care on snorkeling tours, so go with an established company and check conditions on the day.

Should I choose Cahuita or Puerto Viejo?

Cahuita for a smaller, quieter town next to a park, and Puerto Viejo for more beaches, surf and nightlife. They are a short ride apart, so staying in one and visiting the other is simple.
