The Road to Hana is the name most people use for the Hana Highway, a route of roughly 52 miles along Maui's east side from Kahului to the small town of Hāna. The road runs through rainforest and past sea cliffs, with waterfalls, coastal lookouts and black-sand beaches along the way. Many of its bridges have only one lane, so drivers take turns. Rain is common on this side of the island in any season, so check the weather before you go and expect delays on the narrow sections.

A one-day trip works for travelers who pick a few stops and leave early, because the drive takes much longer than the map suggests once you add stops. Travelers who want to hike at an easy pace or see the far end of the road should plan two days with a night in Hāna. Hāna has few hotels, so book early. Waiʻānapanapa State Park needs a reservation, so reserve it before you leave.
