Stay in West End if diving, snorkeling and walkable dinners are the plan, and in West Bay if a wide beach and a resort pool matter more. Sandy Bay suits quiet and marine-park visits, and French Harbour or Coxen Hole only suit a short stop near the ferry or airport. The ferry operator puts West End and West Bay about 40 to 50 minutes from its terminal.

How to choose a base in Roatán
Roatán is a long, narrow island, and the base you pick decides how much of your trip happens in the water, on the sand or in a taxi. The Roatán travel guide covers what to do, and this page settles where to sleep. For the country around it, read the Honduras guide first, because entry rules for Honduras differ from its neighbors.
Four areas cover most visits: West End for diving and dining, West Bay for the beach, Sandy Bay for a quieter stay near the marine park, and the mid-island towns of French Harbour and Coxen Hole for practical stops. The distances matter. The ferry docks mid-island, near French Harbour and Coxen Hole, so West End and West Bay are a real road transfer away; the times are in the ferry or flight from La Ceiba guide. So the first decision is how you arrive, and the second is whether you want the island's busy end or its quiet one.
Prices in this guide are relative bands: $ is a simple guesthouse, $$ a mid-range hotel or dive lodge and $$$ a beach resort. Rates swing with the season, so compare the total at booking, including taxes, any resort fee, breakfast and airport pickup.
UK government advice says the Bay Islands are generally safer than mainland Honduras, but that there have been several attacks by criminals on visitors, including on the ferries to and from the mainland, and that petty theft is a problem in tourist areas, including Roatán. Its advice is to travel with a reputable guide, keep valuables locked in a safe and avoid side roads in remote areas at night. That shapes every recommendation below: a base where you can walk or take a short taxi ride, with a hotel that has a front desk and a safe.
1. West End
West End is the island's diving village. A single road runs beside the water, lined with dive shops, small hotels, restaurants and bars, and the reef is close enough that snorkelers can enter from a dock or take a short boat ride. It is the base for someone who wants to dive twice a day, take a course or simply walk to dinner and back without a taxi.
The Roatan Marine Park, the nonprofit that manages the marine park, runs an EcoStore in West End where its voluntary reef bracelet is sold, and the park staff can answer questions about what is allowed on the reef. The fee and what it pays for are set out in Roatán in 3 days.
The trade-offs are sand and noise. West End has little beach at the water's edge, so travelers who want to lie on white sand all day will be happier in West Bay. Evenings can be lively, so ask for a room away from the main road if you sleep lightly. UK advice says to check with your hotel which ATMs to use, especially in Roatán, and to withdraw cash in shopping centers or banks rather than at night. In practice, bring enough small bills to avoid late-night machine visits.

Choose the West End when dive shops and dinners on foot matter more than sand.

2. West Bay
West Bay is the island's best-known beach, a long stretch of pale sand at the western tip with calm water for swimming and snorkeling from the shore. Resorts and condo hotels line the back of the beach, and the atmosphere is built around pools, loungers and sunset drinks. It suits families, couples and anyone for whom the beach is the trip.
Rates are usually the highest on the island, and a resort stay can include meals, tours or transfers, so compare the total, not the room rate. Many travelers use West Bay as a base for half a trip, then move to West End for the diving, since the two are close. If you plan to dive, ask the resort whether it has an on-site dive operation or partners with one, and whether pickup is included.
The cost of the beach is a quieter evening scene. Resorts keep guests in the property, and walking to a restaurant outside the compound may mean a taxi at night. UK advice says to take care on beaches in north coast towns after dark and to be careful at isolated beaches, so choose a resort with its own beachfront and avoid long walks after sunset.

3. Sandy Bay
Sandy Bay is a quieter stretch of the north shore, close to West End but without its crowds. It is where the Roatan Marine Park has its base, and the area suits visitors who want calm water, reef access and fewer people. The pace is slow, and the choice of places to eat and drink is smaller than in West End, so evenings are a hotel dinner or a short taxi ride.
Property types are small hotels, dive resorts and rental houses. This is a good base for a stay of several nights with a set plan: a few dives or snorkel trips, a quiet pool and a long book. If you want to learn about the reef, the marine park's educational programs and its patrol work, ask about visitor opportunities. The park's page on the Bay Islands National Marine Park says the protected area was declared on 10 June 2010 and covers the municipalities of Utila, Roatán, Santos Guardiola and Guanaja.
The downside is dependence on transport. Confirm how you will reach the hotel from the airport or ferry and how you will get to restaurants and dive shops. A rental car or scooter is possible, but taxis or hotel transport are the safer choice after dark, for the reasons given in the safety note above.

4. French Harbour and Coxen Hole
French Harbour and Coxen Hole are the mid-island towns where much of the island's daily life happens. The ferry terminal sits near these communities, and the airport is a short taxi ride away. A night here makes sense only when a ferry or flight forces it: a very early departure, a late arrival or a storm that disrupts the schedule.
Choose a property with a staffed front desk and secure parking if you drive. The towns are working places rather than resorts, and the choice of places to eat for visitors is narrower. Use a taxi for evenings, and do not plan a beach stay here. In the morning, continue to West End or West Bay by taxi.
If you arrive late and the ferry is the issue, the better move is to book the first night here and the rest of the trip at your main base. That avoids a long ride after dark.

Dive base or beach base: how to decide
The split is simple. If your days start with a boat and end with a log book, sleep in West End or Sandy Bay. If your days start with breakfast on a terrace and end with a swim, sleep in West Bay. If you cannot decide, split the stay: two or three nights at one end, two or three at the other, with a taxi ride in between. The two ends are close enough that a day trip from one to the other is also possible.
Check cover before you dive. UK advice says there is a hyperbaric chamber on Roatán and that emergency medical facilities on the Bay Islands are extremely limited. That makes dive insurance a priority, and a good reason to dive within your certification and to follow the shop's briefing. The travel insurance page explains what to look for.
Sunscreen is part of the reef conversation. The Roatan Marine Park runs an initiative calling for a ban on six chemical sunscreen ingredients it says harm marine life, so pack a mineral sunscreen or a rash guard and ask your dive shop what it prefers.
Mistakes to avoid
The first is booking West Bay and expecting to walk to dive shops. The second is booking West End and expecting a wide beach. The third is underestimating the distance from the ferry: the operator's own figure of 40 to 50 minutes to West End and West Bay means a late ferry arrival can become a late hotel arrival. The fourth is arriving in the dark on a long, unfamiliar island road when a hotel in the mid-island towns would solve it.
The fifth is carrying all your valuables to the beach. UK advice says to keep valuables locked away in a safe if possible and to avoid displaying jewelry, cameras, tablets and phones. The sixth is ignoring the entry rules for Honduras, which differ by passport. Check the visa checker, read the Honduras guide and the visas and entry page before you book.
Booking tips and timing
Book several weeks ahead in most months, and earlier for the drier spring months and for holiday weeks. If your dates are flexible, shoulder periods give more choice. A free-cancellation rate protects you if a ferry or flight changes, and the Roatán ferry or flight from La Ceiba page explains why changes happen.
Check what the property includes. Airport pickup, dive packages, breakfast and tax differ widely, and some resorts add a fee. Ask whether the hotel accepts cards, since small properties may prefer cash. For a plan once you are there, see Roatán in 3 days.
Before you go, sort the basics. An eSIM for Honduras keeps maps and ferry tickets on your phone, and travel insurance covers diving, medical care and delays. See money in Honduras for how to pay on the island.
FAQ
Should you stay in West End or West Bay in Roatán?
West End for divers, snorkelers and anyone who wants restaurants and dive shops on foot. West Bay for a wide beach, resort pools and a quieter evening. Many trips split the stay, with the dive days at West End and the beach days at West Bay.
How far are West End and West Bay from the ferry and airport?
The ferry operator says the airport is about a 15-minute taxi ride from its Roatán terminal and that West End and West Bay are about 40 to 50 minutes from the terminal. Plan the arrival leg and a taxi, not a walk.
Is Roatán safe for tourists?
UK advice says the Bay Islands are generally safer than mainland Honduras but that petty theft is a problem and visitors have been attacked, including on ferries to and from the mainland. It recommends traveling with a reputable guide, using hotel safes and checking with your hotel which ATMs to use.
Is West End good for non-divers?
Yes, if you like a walkable village with restaurants, water taxis and snorkeling from the shore or by boat. The village has little beach, so non-divers who want sand all day do better in West Bay.
When should you book a hotel in Roatán?
Several weeks ahead in most months, and earlier for holiday weeks and the drier spring months. If your dates are flexible, a free-cancellation rate protects against ferry or flight changes.
