Ali'i Kula Lavender is a working farm and garden on Waipoli Road in Upcountry Maui, on the slopes of Haleakala. Its hillside paths pass lavender, protea, succulents and other plants, with broad views across the island. Pick up a map for a self-guided walk, then stop at the shop for lavender lemonade or a scone with honey. The farm is a scenic inland detour, especially if you are already exploring Kula or heading to Haleakala.
A farm on Haleakala's slopes

Ali'i Kula Lavender sits on Waipoli Road in Kula, in Upcountry Maui. The farm covers 13.5 acres on the slopes of Haleakala, at roughly 4,000 feet above sea level. Lavender is not native to Maui, but it grows here in the cooler upcountry climate.
The farm was created by horticulturist Ali'i Chang, who began growing lavender after receiving a plant as a gift. He was struck by how well it grew on the hillside and expanded the planting. Today the grounds combine lavender with protea, succulents, hydrangeas, olive trees and other garden plants.
Walking the garden

You can explore the grounds on your own using a free map, or reserve a place on a guided tour. The tour takes about 30 to 40 minutes and follows paths through lavender, protea and succulents. The views are a major part of the visit: from the hillside, you can look out across Maui, including the Central Valley.
Lavender blooms at different times across the farm. June through September is the main period for seeing the plants in flower, while some varieties bloom at other times of year. The gardens also include other flowering plants, so there is more to see than the lavender beds alone.
Scones, drinks and the farm shop
The farm shop sells lavender products, including honey and moisturizing lotions, alongside lavender-infused treats. Scones are available to warm in the outdoor toaster ovens; add honey or jam afterward. Other treats mentioned at the farm include tea, ice cream and lavender lemonade.
The shop also carries a wide range of goods made with lavender, from personal-care products to food items. If you want to take a taste of the farm home, lavender honey is one of the edible products available. Allow time to browse after your walk.
