Strozzi Palace, at Piazza degli Strozzi in central Florence, pairs a Renaissance palace with changing art exhibitions. Its rusticated stone façade and inner courtyard give you a close look at the building’s architecture, while the galleries bring in work by artists from different periods, including contemporary names. Exhibitions change throughout the year, and installations sometimes appear in the courtyard. Plan about an hour for the main displays. The courtyard is also a reason to stop by if you are not visiting an exhibition.

A Renaissance palace built by the Strozzi family

Construction began in 1489 for Filippo Strozzi the Elder, a Florentine banker whose family rivalled the Medici. The palace was built to express the family’s wealth and standing in the city. Work continued into the 16th century, with completion recorded in 1538.

Architect Simone del Pollaiolo, known as Il Cronaca, is associated with the building. Its rusticated stone façade and carefully balanced proportions are key parts of its Renaissance design. The scale and formal exterior make the palace worth noticing even before you enter the galleries.

A changing programme of exhibitions

Strozzi Palace is an exhibition venue rather than a museum devoted to a fixed collection. Its programme changes over time and has included artists from different periods, from Beato Angelico to Tracey Emin, as well as contemporary art. Past exhibitions have also included work by Mark Rothko, Jeff Koons and Olafur Eliasson; these names are examples of previous shows, not a guide to what is currently on view.

Some exhibitions use colour, light or interactive elements that can hold children’s attention. The format depends on the show, so check the current programme before planning around a particular artist or activity. Displays are arranged through the palace rooms, with information panels accompanying the works.

The courtyard and outdoor installations

The inner courtyard offers a change of pace from the galleries and can be visited without entering an exhibition. At times, the cortile has also held outdoor art installations, bringing contemporary work into the historic setting. The installations vary, so there is no single permanent artwork to expect.

Even a brief visit lets you see how the palace’s architecture frames the open space. If you are passing through central Florence without time for an exhibition, the courtyard makes a practical short stop. For a fuller visit, combine it with the galleries and allow enough time to read the exhibition displays.
