Stay in the Old Town and Venetian Harbour for atmosphere and walkable dinners, in Nea Chora for a city beach that is still a short walk from the harbor, in Halepa for quiet, in Agia Marina or Platanias for resort beaches and in Kalyves if you drive. Hania is a base for western Crete, so match the area to how much you will drive.

How to choose a base in Hania
Hania, also spelled Chania, is the best base in western Crete: a Venetian harbor town with an airport, a ferry port and the gorges and beaches of the west a drive away. The Hania travel guide covers the town and the region, and this page settles where to sleep. For the island as a whole, see the Crete travel guide and the wider Greece guide.
The choice comes down to three things. The first is atmosphere: the old town and harbor are the draw, and sleeping inside them means you can walk to dinner and wake to the harbor, but it is noisier and has no real beach. The second is the beach. Nea Chora has a sandy city beach within walking distance, and the resorts to the west have longer ones, but they are a bus or taxi ride from the old town. The third is the car. If you rent one for the west coast, a base outside the old town with parking can be easier, and a village such as Kalyves becomes an option.
Most visitors sleep in the old town or Nea Chora for a first trip, add one or two days of driving, and base in Hania for four or five nights. If you want to see the center and east of Crete too, see the comparison Hania or Rethymno, or plan to split your stay.
Price bands below are per night for a double room: $ is a simple hotel or apartment, $$ a mid-range hotel, $$$ an upscale boutique hotel or villa. Rates swing widely between shoulder months and August, so treat the bands as a guide and check current prices at booking. Greece charges a climate resilience fee per room per night, with amounts that vary by month and accommodation type, according to the tax authority (AADE); the note on tourist taxes in Europe explains how such charges usually appear.
1. Old Town and Venetian Harbour
The old town is Hania's reason to exist: a maze of lanes behind a Venetian harbor, with a lighthouse, old mosques, Ottoman houses and a covered market. It is the best base for a first trip, because the harbor, restaurants, museums and shops are on foot, and you need no car in town. The Hania travel guide explains the districts and what to see.
Many of the hotels are small boutique places in restored Venetian and Ottoman houses, often with courtyards and rooftop terraces. They can be charming and also noisy at weekends, so ask for a room away from the harbor bars if you sleep lightly. Lanes are narrow and cars are limited, so ask the hotel about parking and luggage access before you arrive, and plan to leave a rental car outside the center.
The trade-off is the beach. The old town has no beach to speak of, so you will walk to Nea Chora or take a bus or taxi for a swim. For many travelers, that is a fair price for the evenings.

2. Nea Chora
Nea Chora is the district just west of the old town, with a sandy beach, a row of seafood tavernas and a quieter pace. It is a good base for families and for travelers who want a swim before dinner, and the walk along the coast to the harbor is a pleasant one. Sunsets here are a highlight, with the old town and the lighthouse in the distance.
The area has fewer boutique hotels than the old town and more apartments and mid-range places, so it can be better value. Check the wind on the day, because a north wind can make the beach choppy, and the beach is busiest at weekends. In the evening you can walk or take a short taxi to the old town.
It also works well if you plan to rent a car for the west coast: parking is easier than in the old town, and the road west is straightforward.

Stay at Nea Chora when you plan a rental car for the west coast.

3. Halepa
Halepa is the residential district east of the harbor, once home to consuls and the island's elite, and today a calm area of neoclassical houses, small hotels and quiet streets. It suits travelers who want a break from the harbor bars and prefer a neighborhood feel, and it works for longer stays. Walk or take a short taxi to the old town and the harbor.
There are few beaches in Halepa itself, and the coastline is rocky in places, so swimming means a short ride. Nightlife is limited, which is the point. It is a good choice for couples, writers and anyone who wants a peaceful base within reach of the center.
Hotels are mostly small and mid-range, and some occupy restored mansions. Prices are often lower than in the old town for the same level of comfort.

4. Agia Marina and Platanias
West of Hania, a long strip of resort beaches runs along the coast road, with Agia Marina, Platanias and Gerani at its heart. Sandy beaches, shallow water, shops and a mix of bars and tavernas make this the easiest area for a family beach week. Buses run to the old town, and it is the first stop on the way to the western beaches.
The trade-off is atmosphere. The strip is busy and commercial in July and August, with more nightlife than the old town, and it is not the Hania you see in photographs. It is also a ride from the harbor, so dinner in the old town needs a bus or taxi.
Accommodation is mostly apartments, studios and larger hotels, with strong choice for families and groups. Book early for summer, when the best places fill first.

5. Kalyves and Apokoronas
Kalyves is a village with a small harbor, a beach and a handful of tavernas on the coast east of Hania, in the Apokoronas district. It is a base for drivers who want a quiet stay, a villa or a private pool, and easy road links to Rethymno and the Georgioupoli area. Sunsets are good, and the hills behind hold small villages with traditional tavernas.
You will need a car. Buses run, but they are infrequent, and evenings are quiet outside high summer. It suits people who want to avoid the town crowds, and it pairs well with Rethymno for a stay that covers the center of the island. The Rethymno guide shows what is on offer at that end.
Most lodging here is apartments, villas and small hotels, with good value in shoulder months. Check the distance to your chosen beaches, which vary in quality.

Booking tips for Hania
Book early for July and August, and for Orthodox Easter, when old-town rooms fill with visitors and returning locals. Late May, June, September and October give a better balance of warm weather, open businesses and lower prices. Some beach hotels and tavernas close from late autumn to spring, so check dates, though the old town stays open.
Book the room first, then the car. If you plan to see Balos and Elafonisi, the Balos and Elafonisi day trips guide explains whether to drive or go by boat, and a rental car decides whether a base outside the old town works. Summer supply is limited, so reserve with your room. The Getting around Greece page covers cars, buses and ferries. Ferries run between Piraeus and Souda, the port of Hania, and the operators publish timetables, some with overnight sailings.
Get an eSIM from the connectivity guide before you go, since signal can fade in gorges and on mountain roads.
Compare cover in the travel insurance guide, and read the Hania travel guide before you fix dates.
Which base to avoid, and the backup plan
Do not book Kalyves or the western resort strip if you plan to spend your evenings in the old town and do not want to drive or pay for taxis every night. Do not book the old town if you need a quiet room and a beach within a few steps, because you will have neither. Do not book Halepa if you want nightlife or a sandy beach outside the door.
A common mistake is choosing a base for the beach and then discovering that the wind has turned the water rough. Hania is exposed to the north wind, so keep a second beach in mind on the opposite side of the headland, and treat a windy day as a day for the old town, the museums and the market. Another mistake is booking a hotel with no parking and then renting a car for the whole stay. If you only need a car for one or two days, rent it for those days and leave it outside the center. For a stay of four or five nights, splitting two nights in the old town and two near the sand is a workable compromise, provided both bookings allow free cancellation.
FAQ
What is the best area to stay in Hania for a first visit?
The Old Town and Venetian Harbour, because the lanes, harbor and restaurants are on foot and you need no car in town. Nea Chora is the best alternative if you want a beach and a quieter street, a walk along the coast from the harbor.
Is it better to stay in Hania old town or Nea Chora?
Old town for atmosphere and evenings; Nea Chora for a swim before dinner and calmer nights. Both are walkable to the harbor. Choose Nea Chora if you travel with children or want a sandy beach close to your door.
Do you need a car if you stay in Hania?
Not for the old town, Nea Chora or Halepa, which are walkable. You need a car or tours for Balos, Elafonisi, Falasarna and mountain villages. Many visitors rent one for two or three days rather than the whole stay.
Which area is best for families in Hania?
Nea Chora and Agia Marina have sandy beaches with shallow water and tavernas. Platanias is busier, with more services. Check the wind forecast for north-facing beaches before you plan a beach day.
Is Kalyves a good base for Chania?
Yes if you drive and want villages, a small beach and quiet evenings. It lies east of Hania, with road links toward Rethymno, and the drive from town is a real commute. It is a poor choice without a car.
When should you book Hania hotels?
Early for July and August, and for Easter, when old-town rooms fill. May, June, September and October have better choice and prices. Some beach hotels close in winter, so check opening dates.
