Do Balos and Elafonisi on separate days, because they lie in opposite directions, each about 1.5–2 hours from Hania. Go by car for flexibility, by boat from Kissamos for the Gramvousa cruise, or by seasonal bus for Elafonisi. Arrive early or late to beat the crowds, and check road, parking and beach rules with local sources before you set off.

Balos or Elafonisi: the short answer
Balos and Elafonisi are the two beach days everyone wants from Hania, and the best plan is to do them on separate days. Balos is a shallow lagoon on the northwest tip of Crete, and Elafonisi is a pale beach with warm, shallow water in the southwest. Each takes about 1.5 to 2 hours to reach from town, in opposite directions. The Hania travel guide sets out the town and the wider region, and the Crete travel guide shows how the west fits the rest of the island.
Choose by what you want. Balos is the more dramatic of the two, with a lagoon, a rocky headland and a long beach under cliffs, but it takes more effort to reach. Elafonisi is easier by road, with a wide, shallow beach and a small islet you can wade to, but it is the more crowded of the two at midday. Both are protected areas with limited facilities, so go prepared.
If you can only manage one, pick Balos for scenery and Elafonisi for an easy, long beach day with children. If you have a third day, add Falasarna, a long sandy beach on the west coast known for its sunsets, or a gorge walk from the Samaria Gorge guide. For a base that makes these days easier, our where to stay in Hania guide compares the areas.
Balos lagoon: car or boat
Balos sits at the tip of the Gramvousa peninsula, west of Kissamos, and you reach it two ways. The first is by car along a dirt road to a parking area above the lagoon, followed by a steep walk down on a rough path. The second is by boat from the port of Kissamos, on a cruise that usually includes a stop at Gramvousa island, with a Venetian fortress on the hill, and time at the lagoon.
By car, allow roughly 1.5 to 2 hours from Hania, depending on traffic. The last stretch is unpaved, narrow and dusty, and many rental contracts exclude unpaved roads from cover, so read yours before you go. Parking can be limited, and local rules on fees, access and the number of cars may apply, so check with the local municipality or a trusted local source before you set off. The walk down takes about 20 to 30 minutes and is steep on the way back, so bring water and wear sturdy shoes.
By boat, you skip the road and the climb, and the cruise gives you a swim and a view of the coast. It is the better choice if you do not want to drive, travel with older relatives or want to see Gramvousa. The cruise has a fixed schedule, so you get limited time at the lagoon, and it runs on a seasonal timetable. Check the operator's schedule, the transfer from Hania and the weather, since strong winds can cancel crossings.

Elafonisi beach: the easier road
Elafonisi lies on the southwest corner of Crete, about 1.5 to 2 hours from Hania by a paved but winding road. The route runs through villages and olive groves, and the drive itself is part of the day. The beach has pale sand, shallow turquoise water and a small islet that you can wade to when the sea is calm. Nearby, the monastery of Chrysoskalitissa sits on a rock above the sea and makes a good stop on the way.
Elafonisi is the more crowded of the two at midday in July and August, because tour buses arrive from across western Crete. The best strategy is to arrive early, before about 10am, or after 4pm, when the day-trippers have left. Facilities are basic: there are umbrellas and a few snack bars, but not much shade away from the main beach, so bring a hat and water. Check local rules on parking, sunbeds and any entry fees for your date.
If you do not drive, a seasonal bus often runs from Hania in summer, and organized tours are common. Check the KTEL schedule for your dates, since timetables change every year. The bus gives limited time at the beach, so a tour or a car is better if you want a long swim. Consider the wind forecast too, because a strong breeze can make the islet crossing less pleasant.

A car is the most flexible way to do both and to add a stop at Falasarna or Seitan Limania, a small cove with a steep path, on the Akrotiri peninsula. If you want to combine one beach day with a gorge walk, base in Hania for several nights, and book the car for the days you need it rather than for the whole stay. Driving tips for west Crete
Roads in the west are narrow, winding and shared with scooters, goats and tour buses, so allow more time than the map suggests. Fill the tank before you leave the main highway, since stations are rare in the far west, and carry water and snacks. Mobile signal fades in the hills, so download a map and consider an eSIM before you travel.
If you drive to Balos, leave early to find parking and to avoid the midday heat on the walk back. A small car handles the dirt road better than a large one, but check what your rental company allows. Do not leave valuables visible in the car, and take your rubbish with you.
Check your insurance. Rental cars often have a high excess on unpaved roads, and some contracts exclude them. Compare travel insurance for rental-car excess, medical cover and trip cancellation, especially if you plan a long day on remote roads.
Plan the day hour by hour
A good Balos day by car starts before 8am. Leave Hania early, stop for a coffee and a pastry in Kissamos if you need one, and be at the parking area by about 9:30 to find a space and walk down before the sun is high. Spend the morning on the lagoon, which is at its best when the water is calm and the light is soft. Climb back up around midday, when many boat passengers are arriving, and have lunch in a village on the way back rather than at the top.
An Elafonisi day by car works in reverse. Leave Hania around 8am, drive through the villages, stop at Chrysoskalitissa for a look at the monastery and reach the beach by late morning. Spend a few hours there, move to the quieter end if the main beach is full, and stay until the tour buses leave in the late afternoon. The light on the sand is lovely at that hour, and the drive back is easier with fewer coaches on the road.
On a boat day, the operator sets the timetable, so use the free time well. Swim first, walk to the viewpoint second and eat last. If you have a few spare hours before the boat, a short walk along the shore at Kissamos gives you a sense of the town, which is less visited than Hania.
If the wind or the sea is rough, have a backup. Falasarna on the west coast is a long sandy beach that works in many conditions, and the Akrotiri peninsula near Hania has coves and a monastery. A quiet day in the old town is also a good fallback, and our where to stay in Hania guide shows which areas make those plans easiest.
Beat the crowds and follow the rules
Both places are popular and protected, and the best days are the quiet ones. Go outside July and August if you can: late May, June, September and early October have warm sea and fewer people, and our best time to visit Greece page explains how the seasons compare. Go early or late in the day, and avoid weekends in peak weeks.
Both areas are part of Crete's protected coast, and rules can include limits on sunbeds, umbrellas, vehicles and stepping on the dunes. Follow local signs, take everything you bring out with you and do not pick plants or shells. Rules and fees can change, so check with the local municipality, the operator or the visitor information before you go.
If you are staying in Hania, read where to stay in Hania to find a base close to the roads, and see our comparison Hania or Rethymno if you are deciding where to sleep on a longer Crete trip.
FAQ
Can you visit Balos and Elafonisi on the same day from Hania?
Technically yes, but it is a poor idea. Balos is northwest and Elafonisi southwest, each about 1.5–2 hours by road, so you would spend most of the day driving. Choose one per day, and add Falasarna or a gorge on the other.
How do you get to Balos from Hania?
By car to the parking area above the lagoon, then a walk down, or by boat from Kissamos on a cruise that often also stops at Gramvousa island. The access road is unpaved, so check your rental cover and local conditions.
Is Elafonisi worth the drive?
Yes if you like shallow turquoise water and a long, pale beach, and you go early or late. At midday in July and August it is crowded. The road is paved, and the drive passes villages and olive groves.
Is there a bus to Elafonisi from Hania?
A seasonal bus usually runs in summer from Hania, but timetables change each year. Check the KTEL Chania schedule for your date, and plan for a long day with limited time at the beach.
What should you bring to Balos and Elafonisi?
Sun protection, water, a hat, water shoes and a way to carry food, since facilities are limited. Both are protected areas, so take your rubbish with you and follow posted rules.
When is the best time of day to visit Balos and Elafonisi?
Early morning or after about 4pm, when day-trip buses and boats have left. The midday hours are the hottest and most crowded. Check wind, since strong north winds can affect boats and the sea.
