The best time to visit Greece, islands and mainland

Late May, June and September suit most Greek island trips. Which month fits swimming, Athens, hiking or a budget, plus meltemi winds, ferries and Greek Easter.

En bref

For most trips choose late May, June or September: warm, long days and a full island timetable without the heat peak of late July and early August. Athens and the mainland sites suit April, May, October and early November. Winter works for Athens, Crete and city breaks, but seasonal island businesses may be shut. Book ferries and Greek Easter weeks early.

Greece has a Mediterranean climate, and the best month depends less on the thermometer than on what you plan to do: swim, walk ancient sites, hike a gorge, hop between islands or spend a long weekend in Athens. For the country overview, start with the Greece travel guide.

Which month for which goal

Match the month to the goal first, then check the details further down.

Swimming and beach days: late May for a first dip if you tolerate cool water, June and September for the best balance. By September the sea has had a whole summer to warm up, and the crowds are thinner than in the middle of August.

Sightseeing in Athens and at ancient sites: April, May, October and early November. The open-air sites have little shade, so the cooler months give you long, comfortable days instead of a race to finish before noon.

Hiking and gorges: May, June, September and October. The Samaria Gorge in Crete has an official season, covered below, and walking in the Aegean heat of late July is a poor idea.

Island hopping: June and September, when sailing timetables are fullest but prices and crowds are below the August peak.

A low budget: the shoulder months on either side of summer, plus the winter months for Athens and the mainland. The trade is shorter days, cooler water and fewer open businesses on small islands.

A winter city break: Athens and larger towns work all year. Small islands are the risky choice in winter.

The seasons at a glance

The Hellenic National Meteorological Service (HNMS) describes the year as two seasons: a cold, rainy one from mid-October to the end of March and a warm, rainless one from April to October. Spring is short, because winter lingers and summer starts early. Autumn is long and warm, and in southern Greece it often runs until the middle of December.

Region matters as much as season. HNMS notes a dry climate in Attica and eastern Greece and a wetter one in the north and west, so Athens and the Cyclades are drier than the Ionian islands and the northwest mainland. Winter is milder in the Aegean and Ionian islands than in the north and east of the mainland, where freezing temperatures are common in January and February.

The islands

The Cyclades, including Santorini and Mykonos, sit in the path of the northerly Etesian winds that HNMS says blow mainly in the Aegean during the warm season. In the hot months these winds keep the coast bearable, and in a strong spell they delay or cancel sailings. If your flight home leaves from Athens, arrive a day early rather than on the morning of the flight.

Crete is the largest island and the most flexible choice because its towns and archaeological sites function all year. The Samaria Gorge is the exception, and it runs to an official calendar.

On small islands the winter closure is the real constraint. Many seasonal hotels, restaurants and beach bars shut for the cold months, and how many varies by island, so confirm that your specific hotel is open before you commit. If you want to feel an island rather than a resort, the alternatives to Santorini suit the shoulder months, but check that your hotel and ferry are running before you commit.

The green Ionian side behaves differently from the Aegean. It is wetter, which HNMS ties to the wetter climate of the west, and its season has its own rhythm. The best time to visit Corfu covers that side in detail.

Athens and the mainland

Athens is dry by Greek standards, but the late July to early August stretch is the hottest of the year, and the Acropolis, the Agora and other open-air sites offer little shade. Plan sightseeing for opening time, move to museums and cafes at midday and come back out in the evening. The Ministry of Culture publishes opening hours for archaeological sites and museums on a seasonal basis, with separate summer and winter schedules, so check the current hours before you build a day around a closing time.

From April to early June and from late September to early November, Athens is far easier to walk. Winter is mild enough for sightseeing, with rainy days you can spend in museums.

On the mainland, Meteora and the northern mountains reward spring and autumn, when walking is comfortable and the landscape is green. Winter brings freezing temperatures to the north, and the south stays much milder. Delphi and the Peloponnese sites are workable in every season; spring is the greenest and midsummer the hottest.

Shoulder seasons: what you give up and gain

Late May and early June gain you long days, green hillsides and a fully running island timetable, and cost you the warmest sea. September gains you the opposite, a warm sea and thinner crowds, and costs you shorter evenings and a risk that smaller operators start closing from the end of the month.

October is the hinge. Autumn is warm in the south, which makes it a good month for Crete and Athens, but the cold, rainy season officially starts in mid-October and ferry timetables begin to thin. If you book October for an island, build in a flexible day and choose accommodation that stays open.

April and early May suit hikers and culture trips better than beach trips. The sea is cold, and Easter can make a normally quiet week one of the busiest of the year.

Who should avoid which month

Avoid the last ten days of July and the first week of August if you are sensitive to heat, traveling with small children or older relatives, or planning to walk archaeological sites at midday. The UK government says that Greece can experience extreme heat, and that you should avoid hiking during the peak hours of sun.

Avoid mid-August if you need a spontaneous trip. The 15 August public holiday is the peak of the domestic summer holiday, and rooms and ferries are tight.

Avoid January and February on small islands unless you want a closed-for-the-season feel. They suit Athens and big towns instead.

Avoid Orthodox Easter week if you dislike crowds and booked-out ferries, and choose it deliberately if you want village processions and family feasts.

Heat, wildfires and weather safety

The UK government warns of a high risk of wildfires during the summer season from April to October, and says Greece can experience extreme heat and flash floods as well as earthquakes. Register your phone to receive emergency alerts, follow the guidance of emergency services and call 112 if you are in immediate danger. Do not light fires or barbecues, and note that causing a wildfire is a criminal offence even if unintentional.

For walking, check the forecast, avoid peak sun hours, carry water, a hat and sunscreen, wear sturdy footwear and tell someone your route. Travel insurance matters here; see the insurance guide for what to compare.

Holidays and events that fill the calendar

Greek Orthodox Easter follows the Orthodox calendar and moves each year. In 2027 it falls on 2 May, five weeks after Western Easter on 28 March, according to the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese calendar. Easter Monday is an official public holiday, and Easter week is the biggest family holiday of the year, so island rooms and ferries book early.

The Dormition of the Virgin on 15 August, listed by the Ministry of Labour among compulsory public holidays, is the peak of the domestic summer break. If you travel in August, book accommodation and sailings far ahead and plan to be flexible.

Greece is in the Schengen area, so the Schengen 90/180 rule limits how long you can stay, and non-EU visitors are registered under the Entry/Exit System at the external border.

Ferries and strikes

Ferry timetables are seasonal. Summer carries the fullest schedule, and winter runs fewer sailings on many routes, so a winter island trip should be built around the timetable rather than the other way around. Confirm each sailing on the operator's own site and buy only from operators or their authorized agents.

The UK government notes that strikes in Greece are regular, sometimes called at short notice, and can disrupt buses, trains, ferries and air travel. Keep a buffer day at the end of an island trip, avoid tight same-day connections and use flexible tickets where the price difference is small.

Mistakes to avoid

Booking a hot-weather itinerary with no midday break is the most common error. Others include assuming every island hotel is open in October, leaving no buffer before a flight, and stacking three islands into one week in August. Each costs a day, and an extra night on one island usually beats a third ferry.

Pack a light scarf or long layer for monasteries and churches, which expect covered shoulders and knees, water shoes for pebbly beaches and a rain layer for any month from October to April. For mobile data on the road, compare options in the eSIM guide, and for ferries, trains and buses see getting around.

FAQ

What is the best month to visit the Greek islands?

June or September for most people. Days are long and warm, the sea has had the summer to warm up, and you avoid the hottest stretch of late July and early August. Late May works if you can accept cooler water.

Is it too hot to visit Athens in summer?

It can be. The Hellenic National Meteorological Service puts average maximums at 29 to 35 degrees Celsius in the hottest period, from late July to early August. Visit open-air sites early, rest at midday and keep museums for the afternoon.

What is the meltemi?

The meltemi is the summer northerly wind of the Aegean, called the Etesian wind by the Hellenic National Meteorological Service. It cools the coast but can disrupt sailings, so leave a spare day before a flight home.

Can you visit the Greek islands in winter?

Yes, but plan around closures. Larger islands and towns stay open, while many seasonal hotels, restaurants and beach bars on small islands close. Confirm that your hotel and your ferry are running before you book.

When is Greek Easter in 2027?

Orthodox Easter falls on 2 May 2027, five weeks after Western Easter on 28 March. It is the biggest family holiday of the year, so ferries and island rooms fill. Easter Monday is an official public holiday.

Is Greece worth visiting in November?

For Athens, museums and mainland sites, yes. The cold, rainy season starts in mid-October, but autumn is often warm in the south. Swimming is unlikely to suit most people, and small islands run reduced services.
