The Danish Architecture Center (DAC) is a museum and exhibition space inside BLOX, beside Copenhagen’s inner harbour. Its exhibitions explore Danish architecture, design and urban development, with interactive displays that connect buildings to daily life. Families can use the children’s area and join architecture workshops; a four-storey slide adds a playful way to move through the building. After the exhibitions, head to the rooftop café for harbour views. Allow about two hours to explore, take a break and browse the design shop.

Architecture inside BLOX

The Danish Architecture Center, usually called DAC, is housed in BLOX, a waterfront building designed by the Dutch architecture firm OMA. The complex combines cultural and public spaces with homes, shops and offices. Its stacked glass forms make it a contemporary setting for exhibitions about the built environment.

DAC opened in BLOX in 2018. The center was founded in 1985 through a collaboration involving Denmark’s Ministry of Culture, its Ministry of Economic and Business Affairs, and the Realdania foundation. Its work covers architecture, design and urban development, with exhibitions and activities for both professionals and the general public.

Exhibitions and interactive displays

Exhibitions examine how buildings and design shape everyday life. The story of Danish architecture reaches from the Viking Age to the present, while other displays explore modern building design, materials, technology and urban planning. The program changes, so the subjects on view depend on when you visit.

Models and interactive elements help explain ideas that can be difficult to grasp from drawings alone. Some exhibitions look at how architecture relates to people and sustainability; past themes have also included women in architecture and plans that never left the drawing board. A large floor map of the city can help you identify buildings to seek out on a walk around Copenhagen.

A visit with children

DAC includes a space for children and runs workshops that introduce architecture through activities. The four-storey slide is another hands-on feature, and adults can use it too. One account lists a minimum height of 110 cm for riders, so check the current requirement before planning a ride with a child.

Interactive displays make the subject accessible beyond specialist architecture audiences. Still, exhibition rooms can feel crowded at busy times, and some displays contain a lot of written information. A weekday or quieter period can give you more room to explore.

Café, shop and practical details

The rooftop café looks out over the harbour and the surrounding waterfront. You need a DAC admission ticket to enter the café, so it is not a separate stop if you are skipping the exhibitions. The design shop sells books about architecture and urban development, along with design-related gifts.

DAC is at Bryghuspladsen 10, beside Copenhagen’s inner harbour. Set aside about two hours for the exhibitions and time to pause at the café or shop. Tickets in advance are recommended. The center has wheelchair-accessible entrances, seating and restrooms, as well as an assistive hearing loop.
