At Bến Nhà Rồng on the Saigon River, this Ho Chi Minh Museum explores Hồ Chí Minh’s life and Vietnam’s history through photographs, documents and other displays. The building began as a commercial port headquarters under French rule and became the starting point of Nguyễn Tất Thành’s departure from Vietnam in 1911. Inside, exhibits are in Vietnamese and English, though some material is Vietnamese-only. Allow time for the river views from the second-floor balcony, then take a quiet break in the garden.

A wharf tied to a turning point

Bến Nhà Rồng began as a commercial port on the Saigon River. The complex was built under French rule as the headquarters of Saigon Commercial Port, with construction dating to 1863 in the material about its history.

Its place in Vietnam’s history is closely connected to Nguyễn Tất Thành, later known as Hồ Chí Minh. On June 5, 1911, he left from this wharf on a journey that lasted 30 years as he sought a path to Vietnam’s independence. The museum and grounds now preserve the site’s connection to that departure.

Photographs, documents and interpretation

The museum presents material about Hồ Chí Minh’s life and political work, along with information about Vietnam’s history. Photographs and documents form much of what visitors see. Displays are in Vietnamese and English, but not every item has English text. An English information pamphlet is available at the ticket office.

The exhibits convey a Vietnamese perspective on events of the period. The layout does not follow a clearly marked timeline, so you may find it useful to read the pamphlet as you move through the rooms. Vietnamese and English guided tours have also been reported, though tour arrangements are not specified here.

The grounds and river setting

The visit extends beyond the exhibition rooms. The second-floor balcony wraps around the building and looks out toward the harbor and river. Outside, the complex includes a garden, a monument to Nguyễn Ái Quốc, a fountain and the harbor grounds. The garden has places to sit, offering a calmer pause after time indoors.

The museum is at 1 Nguyễn Tất Thành Street, beside the river. Its location makes the historic wharf part of the visit: you can see the waterway that connected the port to wider trade and travel, as well as the site associated with Hồ Chí Minh’s departure.
