Presidential Palace of Vietnam

The Presidential Palace stands beside the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum in Hanoi’s Ba Đình district.

The Presidential Palace stands beside the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum in Hanoi’s Ba Đình district. Built from 1900 to 1906 as the residence of the French Governor-General of Indochina, it is known for its bright yellow facade and European-style architecture. The palace is not generally open for interior visits, so plan to admire it from outside. The surrounding Ho Chi Minh complex adds context: Ho Chi Minh declined to live in the grand building and chose simpler quarters nearby.

Construction took place from 1900 to 1906, when Vietnam was part of French Indochina. The palace was designed by French architect Auguste Henri Vildieu as the residence of the Governor-General. Its European-style design and prominent yellow facade set it apart within the Ho Chi Minh complex.

After Vietnam regained independence in 1954, the palace was offered to President Ho Chi Minh as an official residence. He declined to live there, and the building went on to be used for state functions and meetings with important guests.

Ho Chi Minh’s simpler quarters

Ho Chi Minh chose more modest accommodation in the grounds instead of the palace. His nearby stilt house is associated with his life and work, while House No. 6 is also identified with his presidential work. The palace’s grand exterior and these simpler quarters offer different perspectives on the history of the complex.

Access to the palace interior is restricted, and the available visitor route does not amount to a full palace tour. Check what is open when you arrive, and plan to view the building from outside if entry is not permitted.
