Mirror Lake

Mirror Lake is a seasonal pool on Tenaya Creek in Yosemite Valley, below Half Dome and between North Dome and Half Dome.

Mirror Lake is a seasonal pool on Tenaya Creek in Yosemite Valley, below Half Dome and between North Dome and Half Dome. The mostly level walk follows a paved route beside the creek, with shade from conifers and sandy edges where you can pause or wade when water is present. In spring and early summer, calm water can reflect the granite cliffs; as the season advances, the pool may shrink into a meadow. Continue on the loop for views into Tenaya Canyon and of Mount Watkins and Washington Column.

Mirror Lake

Mirror Lake sits on Tenaya Creek in Tenaya Canyon, between North Dome and Half Dome. It is the last remnant of a large glacial lake that once covered Yosemite Valley. The basin formed after landslides in the area, thought to have been caused by an historic earthquake, and fills when Tenaya Creek rises with seasonal water.

The name depends on conditions. When the water is calm, the cliffs and Half Dome can appear on its surface. The pool is usually fullest in spring and early summer. As water levels fall, it can become a shallow stretch of creek, sandy ground or meadow, sometimes called Mirror Meadow. A visit later in the season still brings close views of the granite walls, but not necessarily the lake reflected in them.

Choosing a route

The paved walk to the water is about one mile each way and follows an old service road alongside Tenaya Creek. It is mostly level, with little change in elevation, and has a parallel trail in places. The broad paved section suits a gentle outing and is used by walkers and cyclists. The trailhead is near Yosemite Valley shuttle stop 17.

From the lake, you can return the way you came or take a longer loop around the area. The full loop is commonly described as about five miles, and includes sections beyond the paved approach. Those parts are not all suitable for strollers. Allow more time if you want to follow the loop or stop for a picnic by the water. The shorter walk is a practical choice for families who want an easy outing without committing to the longer route.

Water, views and trail care

When water is present, the shallow edges and naturally formed sandy spots make places to pause, wade or cool off. The setting also draws attention to the surrounding cliffs: Half Dome rises above the pool, while the route gives views toward Tenaya Canyon, Mount Watkins and Washington Column. Birds and ground squirrels may be seen along the way, and wildflowers can appear in early summer.

Stay alert for cyclists on the shared route, and take care on slick rocks near the water. Dogs are allowed on the first mile of the hike, up to where the pavement ends. In warm weather, mosquitoes can be bothersome, particularly on the return after an evening visit. If you are making the trip for reflections, choose a season when the creek is high and check conditions before setting out.
