The Bryce Canyon Visitor Center sits near the park entrance and ticket gates, and it is a sensible first stop when you arrive. Inside, a small museum explains the geology, ecology and human history of the canyon, and a short park film covers how the landscape formed. Rangers can tell you about road and trail conditions, the forecast and the ranger programs running that day. You can also pick up maps, buy souvenirs, refill water and use the restrooms before you head to the viewpoints and trails.

What the museum covers

The small museum explains three things: the geology behind the hoodoos and mesas, the ecology of the area, and the human history of the region.

The exhibits are interactive, and one of them is a prairie dog maze. A 20-minute film called Shadows of Time covers the park's history, so it is worth watching before you hike.

Asking the rangers

The staff can recommend hikes that match your fitness and the time you have. They can also tell you what the trail conditions are and what the weather forecast looks like for the day.

In winter, rangers can suggest snowshoe trails based on current snow. Ranger-led programs, such as hoodoo geology talks and full moon hikes, depend on the season and the weather, so check the program board when you arrive.

The Starry Nights Telescope Viewing is free of charge. To confirm the schedule or reserve a spot, call the Visitor Center at (435) 834-4747.
