The Italian American Museum of Los Angeles documents the history and contributions of Italian Americans in Southern California and across the United States. The community’s story in California reaches back before the state’s founding, but it received little attention in local museums until more recently.

Exhibits are arranged by both chronology and theme. Together, they follow the community’s history from the 18th century into recent times. The collection includes more than 6,000 artifacts, photographs and archival documents.

The building and its earlier life

Architect Julius Kraus designed the building for Marie Hammel. Its upper floors once housed a center for Italian organizations in Los Angeles, where people gathered for political meetings, banquets, weddings and theatrical performances. Stores occupied the lower floors.

From the 1930s, when Olvera Street became a Mexican marketplace, the lower-floor stores were occupied by Olvera Street tenants. The museum now sits in this historic part of Los Angeles, close to the street’s vendors and other cultural attractions.
