José María de Zalvidea built the Old Mill in 1816 in the San Rafael Hills, in what is now San Marino. It ground grain for Mission San Gabriel until 1823. The building is recognized as Southern California’s oldest commercial structure.

The mill’s early purpose gives the site a direct connection to the mission era. Its modest size makes it possible to pair a look inside with time in the garden without planning a long visit.
