Hermit's Rest

Hermit's Rest is a historic stone building and canyon viewpoint at the western end of Hermit Road in Grand Canyon National Park.

Hermit's Rest is a historic stone building and canyon viewpoint at the western end of Hermit Road in Grand Canyon National Park. Its large fireplace, rustic design and setting among the South Rim trees give the stop a character distinct from the open overlooks along the route. Look out across the canyon, browse the gift shop or pick up a snack, then continue on the Rim Trail or explore the Hermit Trail. The Red shuttle serves the stop, and the route passes several viewpoints on the way from Grand Canyon Village.

Hermit's Rest

Hermit's Rest was built in 1914 as a stopping place for tourists travelling by coach from Grand Canyon Village. Architect Mary Colter designed the stone-and-log structure to resemble a rough mountain dwelling, using materials and forms that fit its surroundings. An earthen mound was built around and over part of the building to help it blend into the terrain.

The building’s large arched fireplace is a defining feature inside. Colter had soot added to the stonework to give the fireplace an aged appearance. The structure was intended to evoke a simple cabin, and its design differs from the more formal buildings elsewhere on the South Rim. It now houses a shop and snack counter.

Views and trails at the western end

Hermit's Rest

Hermit's Rest is the western endpoint of Hermit Road and the Rim Trail. From the viewpoint, the canyon’s forested edge frames the scenery. The view includes the deep canyon, side canyons and the Colorado River area; trees partly screen the outlook in places.

The Hermit Trail begins nearby and descends into the canyon. It follows a route once used by mules travelling toward Hermit Camp and continues toward the Colorado River. This is a canyon trail, not a casual rim walk, so plan for a more demanding outing before setting off. For a gentler walk, follow the Rim Trail along the rim and turn back whenever you choose.

Getting there along Hermit Road

Hermit Road runs west from Grand Canyon Village and passes a series of overlooks, including Hopi Point, Mohave Point and Pima Point. The Red shuttle connects the village area with Hermit's Rest and stops at viewpoints along the route. From March through November, private vehicles are restricted on the road, so use the shuttle or hike. In December, January and February, visitors can drive the route.

The Rim Trail links Hermit's Rest with Grand Canyon Village and continues east toward the South Kaibab Trailhead. Its length and surface vary by section, so you can choose a shorter walk and use shuttle stops to return. The path also makes it possible to combine several overlooks with a visit to the historic building.
