Curry Hammock State Park is a protected stretch of shoreline and wild habitat on Little Crawl Key, just north of Marathon in the Middle Keys. Its mangroves, seagrass beds and tropical hardwood forest make it a better stop for paddling and nature walks than for a full day of traditional beach lounging. Launch a kayak from the beach to explore shallow water and mangrove trails, or follow the land trail through native vegetation. Picnic pavilions, grills and a playground make it easy to spend time here with family.

Curry Hammock State Park

Curry Hammock State Park protects more than 1,000 acres of undeveloped land between Key Largo and Big Pine Key. Its habitats include mangrove swamps, seagrass beds and tropical hardwood hammock. The park’s mix of land and shallow coastal water gives you a choice of a nature walk, a paddle or a quiet stop by the shore.

The shoreline is part of the Atlantic side of Little Crawl Key. A sandy beach and launch area provide access to the water, while the park’s picnic spaces and playground give families somewhere to pause between activities.

Kayaks and paddleboards are suited to the shallow water and sheltered routes around the park. A kayak trail through mangroves takes about 90 minutes to paddle. From the beach launch, you can also explore nearby coves and offshore islets. Kayak rentals are available through a self-checkout system that uses a QR code on your phone.

The park is a quieter place to get on the water: motorized vessels cannot be launched here. Wind sports are another part of the shoreline scene, and the beach is used for kiteboarding. Conditions in the water can change with the season, so the park is not always a straightforward choice for swimming or snorkeling.

Trails, wildlife and camping

On land, a nature trail winds through the park’s vegetation, including native thatch palms and mangroves. The protected habitats support local wildlife and birds that pass through during migration. Fall is a notable season for migrating birds, including peregrine falcons.

The campground has gravel sites with privacy between many pitches. Some have ocean views, and sites include water and electricity. Campground facilities are described as clean, and the park also has restrooms, outdoor showers, picnic tables and grills. The beach, fishing access and quiet setting offer alternatives when you are not out paddling.
