Sydney Gardens is Bath’s oldest park, opened in 1795 and set behind the Holburne Museum in Bathwick. Its paths pass flower beds, lawns, large trees and historic features, with the Kennet and Avon Canal running through the grounds. Jane Austen lived nearby and walked in the gardens. You can follow the canal towpath, look for the railway crossing, or pause on a bench; families also have a children’s play area, and the park has tennis courts and cycling paths.

Designed by architect Harcourt Masters, Sydney Gardens opened in 1795. It was created as a place for Bath’s fashionable society to spend time outdoors. The original amusements included a grotto, a castle and a replica village, alongside promenades, dancing, concerts and fireworks. The gardens were also known as Bath Vauxhall Gardens.

The park’s past is tied to Jane Austen, who lived at nearby 4 Sydney Place and regularly walked in the gardens. Members of the royal family visited too. Today, the grounds are a public park, with paths through lawns and planted areas.

The Kennet and Avon Canal runs through the gardens, and the towpath gives you a route beside the water. Boats pass along the canal, and a walk here also takes you to the point where the railway crosses the park. The railway and canal altered the historic grounds, but both are now part of what you see on a walk through Sydney Gardens.

The park has flower beds, large trees, benches, tennis courts and paths suitable for cycling. A children’s play area makes it a practical stop for families. Historic pieces and period plants can be found around the grounds, including within the small walled gardens.

Planning a visit

Sydney Gardens sits behind the Holburne Museum, at the end of Great Pulteney Street in Bathwick. You can combine a walk in the park with a visit to the museum, or continue along the canal towpath. Free tours led by the Mayor’s corps of honorary guides provide more context on the garden’s history.

The flower beds have seasonal interest: snowdrops and hellebores appear in winter. For a quieter pause, there are benches among the paths and lawns. Cafes nearby provide a place to stop for coffee.
