St. Andrew's Church

St.

St. Andrew’s Church crowns Andriyivskyi Descent on a hill above Kyiv’s Podil district. Bartolomeo Rastrelli designed this 18th-century Baroque church, known for its turquoise-and-white exterior, golden details and five domes. From the platform around the building, you can look across Podil toward the Dnieper. Inside, the decoration and religious artifacts are worth seeing when the church is open to visitors; access has been affected by restoration work. The descent below adds more to the stop, with an art market, craft stalls, galleries and cafes along the historic route.

St. Andrew's Church

St. Andrew’s Church stands at the upper end of Andriyivskyi Descent, the steep historic route linking Kyiv’s Upper Town with Podil. Its position on a hill gives it a commanding place in the city skyline and opens views over the older neighbourhood below.

The church was built between 1747 and 1754 to a design by Bartolomeo Rastrelli, an Italian architect. The work was carried out by Ukrainian masters under Ivan Michurin. Empress Elizabeth commissioned the church as part of a planned royal residence in Kyiv. Its Baroque form, pale walls, turquoise accents and gold detailing set it apart from the city’s many Orthodox churches.

What to look for inside

When access is available, look for the church’s elaborate interior decoration and religious artifacts. One distinctive piece is an image of Mary made from painted Easter eggs. The interior has undergone restoration, and access has not always been possible, so confirm that visitors can enter before planning around an indoor visit.

Photography is prohibited inside. The church is an active place of worship, so follow posted instructions and behave with the same courtesy you would in any religious space. A free speaker tour near a scale model of ancient Kyiv lasts about seven minutes and is available in several European languages.

Views and the descent below

The platform around the church gives you a broad outlook over Podil and toward the Dnieper. The Bell Tower is another place to look across the city. Its stairs have low metal posts, so take care as you climb; viewing platforms break up the ascent.

Andriyivskyi Descent is part of the visit, not just the approach. The historic street is lined with craft sellers and art stalls, as well as galleries, cafes and restaurants. You can browse on the way downhill toward Podil, or pause to explore the artistic quarter around the church. At night, illumination gives the church a different presence above the street.
